Rise in racist abuse at football

Rise in racist abuse at football

Kick It Out have reported that discriminatory abuse across professional and grassroots football has risen 32% in 18-19.

43% rise in racism incidents
75% rise in faith based based discrimination (including Islamophobia and anti-semitism)

This really is disgusting.

The CEO of Kick It Out gets it spot on when he says “football reflects the society it is played and watched in and the figures are sadly not surprising”

Sad to see that the alarming rise of public bigotry, endorsed by some politicians as high ranking as world leaders, is seeping back into the beautiful game.

I wasn’t around 30+ years ago, but based on what my dad has told me, I sincerely hope football isn’t heading back there in terms of racism and discrimination. Although it seems that society in general is.

I would challenge the figures.

There is a rise in REPORTED incidents of racism. People are more willing to come forward than before and report it.

Kick it Out revealed a rise in 'reports' of racism. So, you're not actually challenging the figures, but Buckingham's interpretation of them.

For a pedant, you're not actually very accurate.

No, I am challenging the figures. I am saying there hasn't been a rise in racist abuse of the % alleged.

Nothing to do with pedantry, there is a huge difference in the two positions

So, you agree with the fact that there was a rise in the number of reports of racism?

Which is what Kick it Out were saying. But you're challenging that anyway?

Weren’t you banned for starting arguments with other boarders literally days after Justin had passed?

I’ve got no interest in discussing this with you. You’re a nasty troublemaker and I don’t have to defend my interpretation of a rise in reports of racist incidents in football with the likes of you.

As spen said it’s reported + it’s a few hundred only. Just a lot more busy bodies at football now, not more racists.

Reporting racist abuse makes somebody a “busy body”?

So if somebody called Marv or Jobi the N word and a person reported them, that person is a “busy body” in your book?

Are you for real?

There is a huge difference between saying there is a rise in racism at football and there is a rise in reporting of racist incidents at football.

There is far less racism at football than in the 1980s when the National Front used to sell Bulldog & NF News & publish it's racist league of louts.

Everything you say is correct and totally irrelevant to what Kick it Out is reporting. If I am driving along at 30mph and put my foot down, it's still acceleration, even if I was doing a ton five minutes ago.

Spen’s argument appears to be “football was more racist in the 80s when the national front was about”.

Is that the benchmark we set?

I’m the kind of guy who sees a reputable organisation, whose primary aim is to eliminate racism in football, raise concern about a rise in reports of racism and think “Blimey, that’s awful”.

Spen is the kind of guy who sees the same thing from the same organisation and questions the stats then thinks “oh well it was worse in the 80s anyway”

Says all you need to know about this nasty individual. Why his ban was lifted I’ll never know.

I do not think 5hat & do not agree with the approach you impute to me.

As someone whose family suffered racist abuse & attacks, why would I.

You came on a Leyton Orient message board to start arguments with fans who were still mourning days after Justin had passed. Absolutely no excuse for that.

Why on earth the mods lifted your deserved ban I will never know.

You’re now wrecking a thread which was intended to discuss the extremely serious issue of racism in football.

Disgusting behaviour.

I think people today are more inclined to report stuff. Sometimes it’s impossible to determine if this or that has increased or whether there is no great change other than peoples willingness to report issues, which in itself has to be applauded.

We just need to look at figures like this with caution. They indicate an issue for sure and it needs dealing with but to quantify it in percentage terms has to be viewed with care.

Very fair comment.

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that at the same time we are seeing reports of increased discrimination attracts in society in general we see a rise in football.

There seem to be a lot more bananas being thrown at players, a lot more players reporting instances of them being abused than was the case 10 years ago (not 40 years ago). Maybe that’s a place to start.

And the more this stuff gets reported the better. I’d like to think that as a society we are becoming less tolerant of discrimination and more ready to highlight it, rather than ignore it. The moreths stuff gets highlighted the quicker it will be eradicated, well as much as possible.

I think there has been a massive change in what people consider acceptable. The “love thy neighbour” programmes or Alf Garnett types once seen as funny are no longer acceptable. The bar is being raised. More reported issues may just be an indication of that.

It’s an interesting way of looking at the stats. Certainly more positive than my interpretation. Thanks for sharing
