Highlight of Football Supporting Career

Post by Clive Evans »

The end of October 1967 me and my mates made a reckless journey to Cardiff. We all supported different teams, so a trip to support England, meant we were all supporting the same team. We made a huge banner and we set off on a Friday night on a newspaper special. It was reckless, as a train strike was threatened. So if our train left at 2.30 AM, there was a possibility of no train coming back. But often these strikes are a bit half-hearted.
So we got there and had a great time. England won 3-0. Most of the England Supporters were Gas Heads. They had a good turn out and were a friendly bunch. But there were very few England supporters. After the match we went to Cardiff Station and dug in for a long wait. The platform was deserted ( I think the Bristol fans had come by car ). There were a few England supporters going back to London. Then, the England team turned with Sir Alf Ramsey. The train also eventually turned up. I had managed to get Alf to autograph my programme. He was a very pleasant and friendly chap. On the train journey, we slipped up to First Class and I also got Geoff Hurst & Martin Peters to autograph the programme as well. Nowadays people go all over the World supporting England. But for us it was a real adventure.

Might have been the highest i ever jumped off my seat for an Orient goal. That of Cox v Peterborough.

In terms of a day. Might be Peterborough away in November 2013.

Me and my mate drove up, first time in the ground. Everyone was still writing us off and i think it was 1st v 2nd. We dominated from the first minute to the last. Mooney almost scored a world that hit the bar and then they scored a lucky goal and i thought 'typical orient'. We just stepped up through the gears after that and won at a canter. Most dominate away performance i've ever seen against a decent side.

After the game we drove back home and then went out to celebrate until about 3am.
