Dom is making a hell of a lot of unforced errors. Think his arrogance, and open disdain for parliamentary politics and procedure, is going to reduce his shelf life massively. He's clocking up a lot of elected enemies, and ultimately MPs are far harder for Johnson to get rid of than an advisor, no matter how influential.

How the tune is changing. Ian Duncan Smith thinks that the care sector only use cheap labour to increase profits and they should employ better trained people and pay them more. This is so they don't have to bring in foreign workers who would not pass the new entry test. The hypocricy of this is stunning, the care sector cannot afford higher wages because the government cut the social care funding to local authorities, many care homes have closed and others are going out of business. He then says we should train our own people to do these jobs, but where are the training places when the FE sector has been cut to the bone?

It seems there is going to be a serious pandemic of selective amnesia when it comes to austerity and the damage it has done.

In my experience the interest on the debt is usually paid to an offshore entity and avoids/evades UK tax.

Unfortunately, private equity funds, do not take risks, if they can avoid it. Hence the large amount of debt.

A good example is Thames Water. The company's shareholders take a nice dividend. But the company is laddled with debt, if it fails the banks pick up the tab.

This is the same as the care homes.

In which case, as Max has rightly pointed out, they won't be paying out any dividends as they won't have any profits (and therefore no tax liabilties either). They'll be paying interest up the chain to companies based in Luxembourg or Cayman or some such.

My point is that they could afford to pay a proper workforce a proper wage.

It's worse than that. I used to work for a company that had a subsidiary that tried to operate a social care service the proper way. However, the private equity firms had such a negative distortive effect on the market that it was impossible to compete whilst remaining ethical to your workers. So, as RedO said, f*** 'em.

Ironic that the tories have been forced into this immigration thing whilst simultaneously implementing jezzas socialism by making companies pay a proper wage to people they hire.

This immigration policy is Brexit in a nutshell. It's a two card trick. Trick people into thinking that your wages will increase if you don't have immigrants taking your jobs. To think that they had intended the minimum being £30,000.

What if the French, Italians, Spanish, Germans et al respond in kind?

Assume there will be a sweetener (probably tax) for business but what if they don’t increase wages and/or brits decide they don’t want to do those ‘unskilled’ roles?

Will be interesting to see how it works out. Even as a remainer, I’ve always said that brexit can be a good thing but brits will have to step up, and do jobs that they’ve relied on foreigners to do.

Most of the jobs in many regions of the UK wouldn't meet the criteria being set out. Crazy policy that will fail miserably.

I'd expect a glut of hiring pre years end. Perhaps, regulations are in place to prevent this tho.

Tbf if they raise the wage for pret workers to about 20 quid an hour, I’d be all over it
