Seen this on the Beeb too.

More details emerge on 10 Omicron cases in English hospitals
As we heard earlier, 10 people have been hospitalised with the Omicron variant in England.

Now, the UK Health Security Agency has provided some more detail on those cases.

They are aged 18 to 85 and are in hospitals around the country where they were diagnosed with Omicron on or before admission, it says.

The majority had received two doses of Covid vaccination, the UKHSA says, and - as we've been reporting - one person has died.

"Hospitalisations always lag a few weeks behind infections, therefore it isn't surprising that we have started to see people being admitted to hospital with the Omicron variant. Our data shows that getting the booster vaccine is more effective against this variant than two doses alone. Everyone over 18 is now able to walk into a vaccination centre so do not hesitate to get yours. from Dr Susan Hopkins Chief medical adviser UKHSA

So that's 10 people between 18 to 85 in hospital with something as minor as a cold, most of whom have been double jabbed.

Haven’t heard a Sage scientist say it , no . There is reason to doubt BJs announcement this morning. Commentators are saying that dying with Omicron is not the same as dying as a direct result of Omicron.

Except you didn't reference scientists (or anything) when you made the link.

Nor have you referenced any "commentators" above.

If you're going to make false statements based upon lazy "Some people say" you'll be called out for it.

Pointing out misinformation and asking for wild claims to be backed up, especislly if the recipient has a very fragile ego, is a great use of time.

Yeah, after people had been hospitalised with it

I'd of stopped parroting the "Just a cold" line by then, but no.

It stands to reason that if all 67 million of us will come into contact with this new variant before the end of the year , as we have been told and we have no reason to doubt that , anyone who dies between now and then are likely to die with Omicron.
It is already being reported in some countries that this is the first case anywhere in the world where a person has died of Omicron. BJ was careful with his wording and this hasn’t been confirmed as being so.

It may have parts of the common cold in it

NEW YORK, Dec 3 (Reuters) - The Omicron variant of the virus that causes COVID-19 likely acquired at least one of its mutations by picking up a snippet of genetic material from another virus - possibly one that causes the common cold - present in the same infected cells, according to researchers.

This genetic sequence does not appear in any earlier versions of the coronavirus, called SARS-CoV-2, but is ubiquitous in many other viruses including those that cause the common cold, and also in the human genome, researchers said.

By inserting this particular snippet into itself, Omicron might be making itself look "more human," which would help it evade attack by the human immune system, said Venky Soundararajan of Cambridge, Massachusetts-based data analytics firm nference, who led the study posted on Thursday on the website OSF Preprints.

This could mean the virus transmits more easily, while only causing mild or asymptomatic disease. Scientists do not yet know whether Omicron is more infectious than other variants, whether it causes more severe disease or whether it will overtake Delta as the most prevalent variant. It may take several weeks to get answers to these questions.

The omicron variant is likely to have picked up genetic material from another virus that causes the common cold in humans, according to a new preliminary study, prompting one of its authors to suggest omicron could have greater transmissibility but lower virulence than other variants of the coronavirus.

Researchers from Nference, a Cambridge, Mass.-based firm that analyzes biomedical information, sequenced omicron and found a snippet of genetic code that is also present in a virus that can bring about a cold. They say this particular mutation could have occurred in a host simultaneously infected by SARS-CoV-2, also known as the novel coronavirus, and the HCoV-229E coronavirus, which can cause the common cold. The shared genetic code with HCoV-229E has not been detected in other novel coronavirus variants, the scientists said.

ONDON, United Kingdom (AFP) — At least one person has died in Britain after being infected with the Omicron variant, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Monday, as the country launched an ambitious COVID-19 booster shot program to stop the virus’s spread.

Britain — among the countries worst hit by the global health crisis since last year — is believed to be the first government to officially announce a death from the virus mutation.
