Trying not to be a c*nt, but what "societal barriers" do these people face? Need to go back to just shrugging and ignoring stuff because the more I read or learn, the closer I get to having to ask Spiked online to unblock me.

It’s not really about societal barriers though (although finding a way of identifying *out* of a groups seen as privileged forms part of it) - the reality is that it’s about an intensely individualistic, identitarian approach to life that, paradoxically seeks community groups to validate personalities.

To see these identities emerge in cohorts of young people, it basically emerges as subcultures would previously emerge around music.

It would be harmless were it not for how women end up getting the sh*tty end of all of it, and how susceptible young women with mental health issues are to any dissociation with their bodies

On the “asexual” thing, that’s not a bad analogy.

On some of the many newer identity/orientation/gender groups, it’s more akin to having an anorexia train, except anorexia has a flag, and it’s described as

(I suspect in an equivalent thread in such a context, there’d be certain well meaning message boarders saying “hmmm well from a certain angle I can see that she’s fat, and i haven’t weighed her - have you?”)
