So would you prefer it if we didn't even try to hold lying scumbags like Boris to account? That seems to be the worst possible scenario if serial liars like him believed they were above the law at all times.RedDwarf 1881 wrote: ↑Fri May 31, 2019 2:29 pmReally ?. No, I haven't got a problem with that so long as other politicians are held to the same standard of accountability .BoniO wrote: ↑Fri May 31, 2019 5:04 pmSo would you prefer it if we didn't even try to hold lying scumbags like Boris to account? Re: Boris off to court for lies during Brexit Campaign
The geezer that has brought this case originally raised funds through crowd funding with the promise not to take any of the money raised.
Guess what? He’s taken money out of the fund and paid himself. So he’s accusing someone of lying yet has lied himself. He has zero integrity now.
And max I’m not suggesting Boris has any either just pointing out the crass hypocrisy of the guy concerned.

Re: Boris off to court for lies during Brexit Campaign
Having just read the full transcript of the Magistrate's decision, there is something very worrying for democracy if the case succeeds at trial.
An MP holds public office so can be guilty of Misconduct in Public Office.
Imagine a general election campaign where say a sitting Lib Dem MP says something untrue about the Labour candidate eg that they are a paedophile. The Labour candidate says that about the the Tory candidate and the Tory candidate says it about both the Lib Dem MP and the Labour candidate.
The only person who could be charged with a criminal offence is the MP. Thus election candidates can say what they like against the MP with impunity, but not vice versa
Democracy?

I’m still interested in where he arrived at £360 billion. More that our contributions even if he excluded the rebates so he must have included other figures, on the basis he didn’t just make them up. Wonder if he included benefits, housing and other costs arising from EU people living in the Uk, conveniently forgetting their tax contributions.

Do you not think it's correct that a sitting MP (or a Minister, or a Mayor) should be held to a higher standard than a candidate? I do.spen666 wrote: ↑Mon Jun 03, 2019 2:52 pm Having just read the full transcript of the Magistrate's decision, there is something very worrying for democracy if the case succeeds at trial.

I'd argue that the Lie that he promoted carried more weight because it was an MP stating it and promoting it, rather than some other individual. If Aaron Banks had been the one standing in front of the bus, would the lie have carried the same weight in the public's eye as it did with Johnson standing in front of it and repeating it?
The long and the short of it is that if you're in Public Office, you shouldn't engage in misconduct (in this case, lying to the public* over and over again)
*Note for the hard of thinking, I stated "lying to the public", as opposed to making a promise that is not kept in the fullness of time, or making a prediction that does not come to fruition.

Everyone in the contest should be playing to the same rules.
Your question is a bit like saying because Orient won silverware last season, then only get 3 points for a win this season if they win by 3 goals, but other sides don't have to win by 3
