Minimising the damage? You can rebuild the economy. You can support the people affected financially, albeit you might have to tax the rich and the corporations a bit to fund it.
You can’t bring back dead people.
It's not just the economic impact though, is it? People aren't going to tolerate being locked up in their homes indefinitely. The mental and physical health impact of a on/off isolation approach would be unthinkable.

RedO makes a good point. People can get over isolation. You can’t get over death.
It is kind of definitive, don’t you think?

No, because it’s not as simple as that. Obviously.

If there's a spike in domestic violence, suicide attempts, obesity related complications, psychological issues etc, then it's not as simple as getting over something is it? Those are tangible outcomes from continuing with a lockdown for more than a pretty limited period of time.
Then there's also the issue of giving the state the power to place everyone under semi-house arrest indefinitely.

I'm saying they should have started this thing a week or two earlier. That's all. But they didn't cos of the economy.

The #ClapForBoris thing seems to have been started by a right wing troll account
Since then 99% of people disseminating it are people saying "I can't believe #ClapForBoris is trending" without a shred of irony or self awareness

NHS isn't reporting getting overwhelmed at the moment anyway. That's the real test of whether they judged the shutdown timing right.

Thank you for the link. You are suggesting boris and cummings are merely stupid, not malicious?
I don't think either of them are anything like stupid. They just have entirely different values to ordinary folk.

There's a view that a hard recession will end up killing more people in the long term though...
I think the government f*cked up by not implementing this sooner, 100% it was about saving some Tory mates and their business/investments. But I do think there's a finite time that people are willing to put their lives on hold.

A recession will only kill people if you don't support those that need help.

Could do with some video footage of lots of foreign looking people flouting the social distancing guidelines, that might help.
