Tuchel saying that he's proud to be manager of England.
No doubt he'll be joining in with gusto on the rectials of "ten German bombers", or whatever the 'song' is..

RTW you’re being a wee bit over the top here. I’m not fussed either way about Tuchel, but it’s undeniable that in footballing terms, a lot of England fans have, rightly or wrongly, seen Germany as our biggest rivals. As a result, there’s an initial sense by some that even potential success might be a bit undermined by being directed by someone from our rivals. That would make a German manager a different proposition to a Swede, or even an Italian (even though Italy have been much more of a spoiler team for England in the last 15 years or so)
Best to just let people have their adjustment period to it, and then see how it goes
Well that was easy wasn’t it? Someone able to articulate why they might not want a German in a role. I don’t really get why it would be a problem still but all I was asking was some articulation considering cch was very clear it’s definitely not xenophobia at play
Ceb2..he knows this. He's now pretending that would have been his reaction to my reply, and at the same time siding with you.
Pretty easy to clear things up but you've gone all coy for some reason.

Because of a combination of hangover from the geopolitical stuff, the fact that during the time when a lot of people’s formative experiences with football happened Germany broke England hearts repeatedly, and tabloid fuelled jingoism.
I’m not saying that no objections to this are possibly rooted in xenophobia. I’m just saying that it’s a bit much to go all out on “moaning about a German coach? Must be rooted in racism, then”

Yep. There are three countries from which, appointing a coach, was always going to trigger a reaction:
1 - Germany - because "years of hurt"
2 - Argentina - because Hand of God (and possibly a bit of Batistuta vs Beckham in France 98)
3 - Scotland - Because that would be utterly humiliating

What I’m getting at is that if you are of the opinion that international football should also be about putting the best English managers against the best from other nations, then “boooo a German manager” is in essence the same panto stuff as the idea of international rivalry anyway. It only becomes something sinister if there’s abuse or something

A rivalry requires both sides to care, and Germany don't give a sh*t about us. It's a pretty anglophile country in general, the dislike for it from certain quarters of English press and supporters seems pretty weird I think.
Argentina is the big one and a much more fun rivalry because they are proper dicks when it comes to football.

Why would they? They have beaten us in almost every single important game they've played us in, apart from 66, and have won 4 world cups and 3 euros to our one world cup. There isn't any cultural rivalry from their perspective. If it is a rivalry, it's pathetically one sided.

It's not about how many times they have beaten us or how much better than us they have been over the years. Its about history whether you like it or not. Almost every country in the world raises their eyebrows and their game when they get pitted against us. The nation that invented the game. Don't kid yourself, the Germans get a special kick out of it when they beat us.

Knowing a fair few Germans through work it’s a lob-sided rivalry.
According to them we’re about joint third behind the Dutch and Italians and on par with the French

From my observations: no, they dont. They are mostly bemused as to why they are seen by the Brits as the greatest rival.
My take on it: the Brits are deluded about their greatness in the world and are into the fantasy of being the inventors of football (along with the fantasy of being the inventors of democracy and parliaments). Time to face and accept reality.
I think Tuchel is a very brave man: the likes of CCH will be desperate for him to fail ( to satisfy their disdain of anything German) while also desperate for someone to make the England team win to satisfy their delusion of inborn greatness and superiority.

Think the special kick has probably lost some of its magic given the number of times it's happened. I was at the euros in the summer and the only comments I got were the sort of patronising 'i hope you do well' niceties I would say to a Scotland fan.
