I walked past the Zbishop Stortford dressing room at half time and their manager was going ballistic telling them to get at our full backs who were ****. They certainly got at us second half and taking off Wright and the midfield triallist for Shabani and Alabi weakened us considerably. Judd and Sweeney started to look very vulnerable and the back four that looked OK first half started to look very uncomfortable. We conceded three shocking goals and created less.

Pros - Lee Angol will be a real asset this season and is a good finisher, he linked up well with JMD and Wilkinson, Ogie did Well frightening how good he could be. We won't field that inexperienced defence again. Credit the trialists who both did OK.
We looked far better with Wright anchoring the midfield first half.

Cons - Judd, Sweeney, Gorman, Alabi, Shabani were all poor. Did themselves no favours in the second half.

After last season both Gorman and Alabi have got to step up to the plate so it's disappointing to hear both had a bad night tonight .

I know it the weather is the same for both sides, but don't know why we didn't use the subs a bit more, and it might have been a lot to give some of the younger guys 90 minutes against old opposition. Not a surprise we dipped.

Taking off the likes of Sweeney, Ogie, Janata at half time or even 60 minutes would have been good. What was a great night for them turned into a bit of a downer.

Result has probably massively increased the chance of a couple of signings before the season starts.
It would be massively disappointing if we didn't bring in a winger/striker and a midfield player before Aug 3rd.
Massively irresponsible even.

I wouldn't read too much in to this game, but the youth aren't ready thats a fact,
Fact 2 Brill would not have let 3 goals in tonight,
Fact 3 no 26 triallist put on a superb performance, would like to see him play at Norwich, & let a lot more people make their minds up,
Everybody was talking about this fella,
Best triallist performance for a very long time,
Yes agreed Angol may be the new Bonne,
I quite enjoyed tonight but a different team came out in 2nd half & BS were the better side in 2nd half.
Lets wait till Norwich.

The youth are making up our squad. With key players still missing, like Turley, Brill, Jobi, Dayton, Clay, we are a bit thin on replacements. Going into the season on a bare bones squad. If they stay fit, fine, but injuries and suspensions and we will be relying on the kids. Didn’t end well the last time we did that.

Not a great way to start the season.

He's got to be 26+ and he's still playing semi-professional football so I'd imagine he's a step off what we're looking for.
Fair point. Not sure why we have non-league triallists. Why don’t we have uncontracted L1 and L2 players as triallists?
Disoriented asked if Chambers was any good. The implied question being whether we might be seriously looking to sign Michael Chambers. I pointed out the obvious reason why we wouldn't and you have inferred that I was actually against him turning out for us in a pre-season friendly to make up the numbers. Strange.
You infer wrong. If any player can make a difference is available and within our means, then he should be considered. However, any player of his age is in non-league football for a reason.

I hope we bring in some players.

My worry is that it's a bit late in the day. Its not TOO late, but some players without a club may not have had a full pre-season. Whoever comes in wont have had a chance to get used to tactics and the other players style as well as bonding thats key in pre-season.

These are new needs, we knew what we needed once Bonne and Koroma went.

Stortford have 13 minutes of highlights up:

One thing that was not apparent at the time is how some players went straight for the tunnel at the final whistle without bothering to shake hands. Smacks of bad manners to me, they gave us a good game and in the long run might have done us a favour.

A few observances from the game

First, Im not sure Janata is going to make it as a keeper. he looks far too small to me

Second Wilko looked like he couldnt be bothered to move himself much........whether it was the heat, i have no idea but he looked lazy .

Third, i think Angol is going to be a success for us. he has great feet, and a bagful of tricks

that is all

Janata is 6ft 1

Wilkinson probably still feeling the effects of his injury

You may have it right about Angol but he hasn’t really been seriously tested yet

Janata is a decent keeper he is probably the best shot stopper of the three we have but he didn't really have his best night last night.

Wilkinsons movement was excellent last night and he linked up nicely with Angol and JMD, he was involved in the build up for two of the goals, it was his first 90 minutes of the season last night so he faded a little ......but they all did never struck me for one second he was "lazy"

Agree about Angol he has got great feet and will make space to get a shot away when others wouldn't.

We included a lot of young players in one go last night but we wouldn't do that in a league game, thought Ogie was bristling with talent liked the triallists especially the centre half , but was particularly dissapointed with Judd last night who was all over the place second half. Janata is going to be an excellent keeper but even Brill would have struggled the way we melted defensively last night.

As I mentioned earlier the Bishop Stortford management team were ripping into their players to get at our full backs during half time that's exactly what they did and were much the better team after half time.

Good minutes for everyone last night, concerning now that Clay has been missing the last couple of games and we haven't seen Jobi, Turley or Brill yet. We need those two signings sooner rather than later, no excuses about waiting for things to happen elsewhere, we need to make things happen and get reinforcements in asap.

I really like the clips I have seen of Angol but we have to consider the opposition. L2 defenders will be well up on the sort of tricks he has. But positive none the less. Could be a very good signing.

But given the absence of key players I’m starting to fear for us early in the season. With normally winnable games against Cheltenham and Macclesfield we need to hit the ground running. We may be hitting the ground hobbling at this rate. New players in at this late stage won’t help immediately as they will need time to bed in.

Not good. But hey ho, lets be positive. I’m sure there will be worse teams than us this season.

I'm all for patience getting the right players in but we seem to have injury issues which is going to weaken us and has made signings an imperitive really, and while I understand what Embleton was saying that sometimes things have to happen at other clubs, Ling has lists of players for every position and sometimes you have to make things happen. We have funds available time to use them.

Personally I'd rather wait a week or two for number one on the list than go straight in for number 3
