Nah but he would probably have hit a screamer from the right hand side of the box :D
Agree but then again not impossible that he MIGHT just have strayed over into the centre. After all in modern football, its a game of fluidity and movement and players are not expected to stay rigidly in set zonal positions, other players cover your position if you move forward etc.
I Like your thinking Sidney . Curse Richie for not letting Tom roam & not letting him score 2 screamers.
Exactly !
Also some players have this natural inbuilt instinct as to where the ball might go, especially in a case like that where he was on the edge of the area waiting to pick the ball up and have a strike at goal. I scored lots of goals myself from the edge of the penalty area, picking up the loose balls from rebounds from free kicks, corners etc. Its all about being able to read the game.

It's not a natural born instinct Sid. He deliberately stands 5/10 yards outside of the box for corners, under instruction. It's called tactics.

And that’s true. But having been asked to do a job for the team it’s churlish to pick him up on the fact he’s not a natural midfield player, we all know that, Wellen’s wasn’t stating anything we don’t know it wasn’t a criticism of TJ just something you would expect with a RB filling in at CDM but tbh it’s not unusual that some boarders look for and pick out what they perceive as negatives even after a decent performance.
I will take that as you referring to me. What I said was that if Coleman had been caught out as many times as James was then he would have been marked as a 4 or 5 (by those who give marks).
It wasn't aimed at you in particular, there are a few on here who constantly pick the negatives out of the team. If Colman put in a performance worthy of a 7 or 8 that would be great and I for one would be delighted. He just needs to win his place back and do it. Are you going to correct your remark that Wellens criticised TJ directly because he didnt did he? He made a general point about Central Midfield players there was no direct criticism of TJ as you claimed.
My last word on this subject. RW was specifically talking about the cdm role TJ occupied. He was not criticising him but he made the very clear point that he wants more out of that specialised position and thats why someone will be in to fill it shortly.

Yeah but a midfielder stands at the right angles & knows where the ball is going to be

Natural goal scorers have an instinct as to where the ball will go when in and around the box. Jimmy Greaves had it, Denis Law had it and to a lesser degree Danny Johnson and Ruel have it, also natural goal scorers are cool when given a goal scoring chance, they have an inbuilt instinct as to where the goal is, Greaves was cool and precise when given a goal scoring chance, often just passing the ball into the net, no leaning back and blazing the ball over the top from Jimmy ! Natural defenders also have a six sense as to where the ball is going and have a habit of nicking the ball of attackers feet, Bobby Moore was not the fastest defender but a great one and had great anticipation. Pele said he was the greatest defender he ever played against ! Some players have this sense of where to go when in and around the penalty area and also its a natural talent to hit the ball like James did with his goal. Also if its NOT a natural born instinct, then how come some players are regular goal scorers and some cant hit a barn door, you cant coach a player to become George Best, he was a one off genius of a footballer. Some sportsmen or women in any sports are naturals, some are Genius like Pele and George Best, many are just average.

Quote........ '' Jock Stein, the legendary Celtic and Scotland manager, said of Moore: "There should be a law against him. He knows what's happening 20 minutes before everyone else." That ability to read and anticipate the play accounted for Moore's exceptional positional sense, his uncanny use of space, and the timing and precision of his tackling. He rarely went to ground when making a tackle and was such a good judge of high balls that he often didn't need to head them; he would position himself expertly to chest the ball down and in one smooth movement deliver a measured pass to a team-mate further upfield''

Of our recent strikers, Super Kevin Lisbie, Scott McGleish, Jay Simpson, DJ & Macca and even Moons for one glorious season, all had a instinct for goal opportunities. If only we could find another in this transfer window.
