He later apologised – and rightly so – but it demonstrated to me just how out-of-touch he was with many traditional Labour voters, and the election was subsequently lost.
My son was canvassing for Labour yesterday in a traditional Labour area.

The wolves are circling as they smell blood. When even the Daily Mail hacks turn against you, you know you're finished.

There's only two possibilities about what has happened.

Either he always planned on leaving the event early (and leaving it to the Foreign Secretary and Leader of the Opposition to rub shoulders with the rest of the world leaders). Or, he decided to cut his visit short to take advantage of a political interview to try and bolster his election chances. Neither are survivable (under normal circumstances).

Do you think the current circumstances make it more survivable or less survivable?

The tories can be ruthless, it’d probably be good optics to cut their losses and effectively write off this election

David Cameron is probably enjoying this, based on his reasonable guy act just now :D

I just don't know how to call this one. I mean, when you lose the support of 90-year-old Muriel, the game is truly up. But I honestly don't know who would want to take over from him.

Cameron would surely fancy a shot at redemption

An election loss he didn’t have to own, but giving him a chance to show humility etc.

I dunno, thinking out loud. But it’s almost like he was so certain to lose anyway that just letting him carry on and lose can’t really be an option, no?

If I was the secret boss of the Tories, I'd sack Sunak with immediate effect and say to Cameron and Mordaunt that one of them has to take one for the team and be leader for the remainder of the campaign. And that they have to draw straws and whichever one loses... wins.

Also, Cameron is not an MP. They have until 4.00pm today to parachute him into a safe constituency if he is to be their Plan B.

Mordaunt is going to have to seriously bring her A-game to the election debate tonight.

I mean, it’s classic politicians interview, but he should have known that this wasn’t the time to deploy it

I predicted this on here some time ago and even said he would be a worser performer than May.

The Tories just need him to own the annihilation of their dirty, stinkin' rotten party of rats. Nigel can then cobble together the far right after the election.

I can’t see anyone other than Rishi being PM up to the Election - who in their right mind would take it on at this point in time?

Such an odd defence to robo-repeat that "the itinerary was set before the election" when ITV have already come out and made clear it was an interview...about the election.
