New Zealand is finally to abandon its zero-Covid goal, as it's just not realistic with the Delta variant. Their not going to just let it rip, but still use a combination of suppression tactics along with vaccination and treatments.

May get a bit sticky given their population is only 40% vaccinated compared to say us who are 67%

How do we see things playing out this winter and long term?

Rightly or wongly, the current 'steady state' appears to be acceptable to society. I found myself booking a short break for next February half-term yesterday. It struck me that I have not planned something that far ahead since the start of the pandemic. A reverse back into some form of lockdown would be very difficult for most people to take, so I can only see things changing should a new deadly variant emerge.

Yeah, but I reckon that everyone who is willing to be vaccinated will have had at least one jab by now. And infection rates is not the only metric. Hospitalisation and above-average death rates look reasonably stable. We were always going to have to strike some sort of balance.

Obviously, this doestake into account things like long covid.

Yesterday there were 43+ thousand cases reported, and 148 deaths, thats a yearly equivalent of 15.5 million cases, and 54,000 deaths.

The numbers have been creeping up, and lets say this trend continues, so by New Years Day, those numbers are double. what about if by the end of February, they have trebled, do you think the government will allow 160,000 deaths a year to just continue, or 45 million cases a year to continue unabated?
I certainly dont, the NHS would have gone way beyond its coping point. People left to die a horrible death in their homes/in the street etc would be unacceptable.
A lockdown, would happen
Just as an aside, The governments strategy was to fight the virus with vaccines, but certainly IMO, the vaccine doesn't seem too effective. How can it be with these numbers of infections and deaths.
A rethink is necessary

The vaccine is very effective at preventing deaths and serious illness, otherwise those figures would be alot higher right now.

About a week ago a Government chappie was on the radio and quoted something like 99.55% of all Covid deaths are with unvaccinated people. He then did a sort of "radio " type shrug of the shoulders. I really think there should be a sturdier approach to these unvaccinated morons. People call out footballers who miss open goals. They should call out beefy blokes, who at the end of the day, are scared of a little silly sausage in the arm. 'Cos that's what it's all about.

That is mis-information Clive. The number of fully vaccinated people getting covid is 47%....almost half of all new cases are fully jabbed people

You're talking about Covid cases, and Clive's Government chap was talking about deaths - so maybe that's why it seems like misinformation to you.

Taking the number of infections, however, based on those numbers over half of all new infections are in the non-vaccinated, yet with 90% take up, these folk only represent about 10% of the population. If the vaccine were not effective, you'd expect the numbers of new infections to be split 90/10 between vaccinated and non.

The vulnerable should shield, minimise interactions. This is just common sense when infections are high.

It’s a tough decision to go to another lockdown. Apart from the financial and mental health issues, they are saying that lockdown and restrictions last winter has messed with our immune system and could cause 60000 flu deaths this winter.
