Notice Vince saying Essex 'changed the ball a few times'. I thought that's what umpires did, after using their special rings.
At least 2 went into the river and 1 into the Hays Close gardens from sixes hit by their batsmen, perhaps Vince will tell them to only hit fours in future so the ball doesn't get changed.

Gloucestershire all out for 136 in less than 40 overs, Harmer with another 5.

And the consistently useless Nick Browne is already back in the pavilion with his feet up 7-1

The number of batting and bowling points we've missed out on come to an extra win. Slow batting's not helped either. Browne remains a gamble.

I'm amazed how he manages to keep his place.

Not to mention his new 2 year contract!

Not too fussed about slow batting as long as the players put the score on the board. Current game against Gloucester is well advanced with an hour left on day one,we should only be 20 or so behind tonight at worst. I'd be happy for us to bat through Tuesday and declare on Wedenesday lunchtime 300 or so ahead because after watching Harmer bowl at them this morning they really haven't got a plan against him.

A pleasant day sitting in the lower tier of the Tom Pearce stand to stay out of the sun. Another ton for Sir Alastair tomorrow hopefully and the skipper

Sounds good to me, I'm planning on going on Wednesday.

Another win but only three 1st innings batting points. I feel lack of batting points is going to cost us come the season end.

Only 12 batting points all season, totally ridiculous, especially when you consider we've won 4 of the games. Nice to see Nick Browne actually play some shots though.

Our lack of batting points are worth the points for a win. If it wasn:t for Harmer etc we wouldn't be anywhere near 4th. Having said that - well done Essex, hope we can make the next match count!

A win is a win, this one though shows up our reliance on Cook and Harmer. we are lucky to have both but I've felt for a few seasons now that out batters are simply not good enough. Browne, Westley and Lawrence don't score the volume of runs that a championship winning side need. Our bowling is our strength but again very reliant on Harmer. Rumours that we might try and sign Ravi Ashwin when Harmer is away with South Africa, be surprised if we do we are notthat ambitious even for a few matches.

As you say, would be great if we signed Ashwin, but I'll be majorly surprised.

There's a shock!! How does he stay in the team.

Poor defensive shot. Selecting Browne will always be a gamble. Pressure on Westley and Cook to get a lot of runs together.

Westley out. When you look at our team our batting looks poor. Badly need a recognised batsman from somewhere.

Lawrence gone first ball. Down to the middle order with only 50 on the board.

Thanks to Harmer and Rossington it wasn't the disaster it first appeared to be. Bonus wicket for us at the end as well.

Once again the middle/tail rescue is, by which time only a couple of batting points. Snater's dismissal was reckless to say the least.

Topsy Turvy day at the Oval today. We really let Surrey off the hook earlier.

Their mid/tail order rescued them. A one innings a side match.
