Confidence vote confirmed. I expect Johnson will win it, but this has to be the beginning of his end.
I suspect that some of the 54 letters needed have come from the Johnson camp. Having the vote today is the best timing for him as it will be easier for him to win than after the up coming by-elections. This will keep him in power for another year with the hope he can turn his fortunes around.
For Labour this is the dream scenario as the likelihood of Johnson sticking around will mean that the public will be get more use to the idea of voting Labour at the next election which will be in 2024.
Boris Johnson, once a conservative vote catcher is now a vote loser, same as Corbyn was a vote loser for Labour. Starmer must be hoping that Boris stays on as Tory leader being as if he goes, then someone else may make a far better job of it and start winning votes back for the Conservative party.
In 2017 Corbyn won more votes than Tory Blair did in 1997. Just an inconvenient fact for the haters.

Who else do the Tories have who would attract more voters than Boris is the problem for Tories

But Blair won that election and Corbyn didn’t, because the system means having to win votes in the right places rather than just getting the most votes. I don’t like the system, but it’s utter madness to cling to some sort of “moral victory” when it hasn’t actually resulted in a Labour government.

Populism all that matters?
for keeping your seat and getting re-elected yes.
To vote for a candidate that is not popular with electorate is the sort of thing Labour did with Corbyn, Foot, Kinnock etc

I'm not claiming any sort of moral victory. I was only pointing out Squidney was talking sh*t.

Exactly, Jeremy Corby was not competing against Tony Blair

But he’s not really talking sh*t here, because “vote winner” is only meaningful if you’re winning the votes that win you an election. It’s not actually difficult to win votes if you’re not strategically aiming at winning the votes that will win elections

Especially when you achieve the worst election loss for 84 years.

But he can't be a vote loser if he added more votes than Blair had in 1997. Which was my point.

It’s a great point. I definitely think it’s a good idea for parties that want to get into power to focus on a strategy that leads to a result that gives bragging rights rather than electoral success. I bet the Tories are really smarting from not getting as many votes as Labour, as they celebrate their 12th year in power

But that wasn't my point. Interesting post though.

Like the faint aroma of egg sandwiches you had 3 days ago that just won't go away.

211 Tory MPs have made it public that they are not bothered about honesty and integrity.
These 'morally inadequates' are still in parliament, continuing to collect mega pay and benefits.
