I think it holds true. History is littered with examples.
People want to feel listened to and seen. Trump is great at that. I don't think people actually think through the outcome and the actual impact on their lives. It's just someone there that is a rebel, who has their back.

It’s both true that a lot of the electorate are thicko racists, and also that a party can’t win unless it can convince some thicko racists to vote for them
