Sounds like we will have to sacrifice Ukraine, the Baltic states and a fair sized chunk of Poland to secure the peace. Pesky Russkies.

Macron let things slip earlier in the week with his Finlandization comment.

Peace, for now, can probably be secured by acceptance of the Minsk 2 agreement. That means the federalisation of Ukraine with Russian proxies being able to veto any foreign policy they disagree with. The US is happy for that as it means they no longer have the Ruskies distracting them from their Indo-pacific concerns. Germany and France are also happy with that as it means they don't have to deal with a European security crisis at a time when they're ill-prepared.

It's just that Ukraine may feel differently. The President, should he accept Minsk 2, would effectively be ending Ukraine's sovereignty. And, even if he felt that this was the least-worst option available to him, it's not clear how or even if he can implement it. There's a good chance he'll end up swinging from a lamppost should he try, especially now that they been training thousands of armed Ukrainians in the civilian defence force.

It seems that Russia has foreseen this situation, and is calculating that Minsk 2 is just not probable, even if everyone agrees to it. Russia then has to factor in some other calculations, especially its dire demographic trends. In just eight years it's estimated that the Russian population will have aged to such a degree that it will only be able to muster 50% of a military force compared to now. For the Russians, if military action is to be an option, it's now or never.

The Russian navy has now effectively blockaded Ukraine access to the Black sea. Almost all the military equipment is in place, with just a few remaining BTGs from the eastern distract and navy vessels on their way. It's just the final movement of personnel that is now required, and this can happen very quickly and will be a lot more difficult to detect than hardware. Everything really does appear to be aligning with 20 February after which, if a further invasion occurs, it could happen very quickly and with little warning.

To be fair, he's quite convincing isn't he? I have no idea whether his posts are true or utter bollocks but they do look the part.

I hear that Moggie is spitting feathers. Now the guy is not normally interested in Politics ( he is only a Politician to protects his interests ). Consequently he took his eye off the ball and just realised that his party wants to ban his beloved foie gras as well as his wife's fur coats, in the Cruelty to Animals Bill. So he has been stamping his feet like a petulant schoolboy and thcreaming and thcreaming until he is thsick ( which he can ). So the Tories are dropping the relevant parts of the Bill. Thank goodness there is one Tory who knows what is best protected. ( who is worried about a few well fed geese in the Perigord?)

Johnson ending all Covid management and protection regimes a month earlier than planned. Infection rate still very high and free testing will end on April fools day! Seems this is another primarily self serving decision from him to move attention away from his lock down law breaking before the police report their findings (that's even assuming that they will have the courage to apply the rules 'without fear or favour').

The revelations at the Grenfell Enquiry over the last week have been pretty shocking, and could even have made top billing on the news. These proceedings were going to happen anyway, so they've not been rigged to coincide with the Russian invasion of Ukraine, but it does mean that the issue isn't receiving the interest it deserves.
