A question, if we were to fluke our way to the final via this turgid football and sneaking 1 goal wins then get comprehensively taken apart by Germany / Spain in the final is that success or failure?

Watching those two sides the ball moves quickly and efficiently compared to our plodding back and sideways. I think the crux of the complaints is fans seeing us make hard work of lower ranked teams and knowing deep down if we play like that against a top side it'll be painful to watch.

If we got to a second consecutive euros final having only ever made a single final previously in our history, then yes it'd be insane not to class that as a success.

I'm more worried about us getting done by an Austria or Switzerland, who we should be undoubtedly beating but would struggle to based on performances at the tournament.

Also: there is absolutely nothing new about England lumbering unconvincingly through a tournament, then coming unstuck against the first truly fancied side they come up against - usually as England finally raise their game. In fact that's pretty typical for us (Mexico 86, Italia 90, France 98 being classics of the genre)... the only difference is that Southgate's "luck" means we go a lot deeper before that happens.

He's actually smashed quite a few curses over the years: winning a shootout in a World Cup, winning an opening match at the Euros, beating a fancied side in a knockout. And he's still in with a chance of smashing another one over the next couple of weeks.

Maybe you could expand on why, for example, you think that dropping out best striker (possibly ever) and one of the best forwards in the world for a crucial knock out quarter final is a good idea and would elevate tensions?

Gladly. The three players I have mentioned are great players, but they have not been playing to their full potential so far- lack of confidence, responding negatively to criticism, fatigue etc may be factors Do they reuqire an opportunity to rest? The tensions I have alluded to relate to some of the younger players in the squad complaining about their lack of game time - I have gleaned this through listening to the Talksport coverage. Our better moments in the tournament so far have tended to be when substitutions have been made and these players have been thrown on to prove their worth.

Watching the games last night with few strikers, lots of sideways stuff and for the most part teams being quite cautious, perhaps this is just modern football now and Southgate is right?

Once again we have a kind route to the final, it could be the first time we face a big name side if Turkey beat the dutch, unbelievable.

Be interesting to see how he does. Started out there but could be wasted. I love him but he’s done f*** all on the right so far.

Overall I think it’s a bold move but a sensible one by sir Gareth. Team looks more balanced and Foden should be involved more.

Only question is trippiers at right back considering he doesn’t get forward but a lot of the Swiss threat comes down their left so probably too risky putting Trent there

The line up on BBC tv had Saka at left wing-back and Trippier at right wing-back, but as soon as they kicked off, Saka was on the right and Trippier on the left, very odd ? t
