We could go from having about 50 energy suppliers as of March, to less than ten in a month or two. This is what I heard on the wireless this morning, so am assuming it's an alarmist worst case scenario. But still, to be even contemplating that prospect...
But that's the point. They're not "suppliers" are they, really? They're billing companies. The so-called energy market isn't a real market - the energy is generated, fed into a universal network through which it's piped to the consumer. These companies don't run gas pipes and electricity cables to their customers.

It's just a fake "market" that's been crowbarred into the energy supply system. I'd nationalise the whole lot of it and then the government would be supplier, distributor and biller and could easily protect the consumer from these price rises.

Well, yeah, there is that. But don't these companies also act as wholesale purchasers, or is that all largely centralised too?

There’s literally no way The Government would be able to run all this ourselves.

We need these well run commercial energy companies such as edf to sort it out properly.

It's not a question of whether a government could run this. It's whether our government could.

But at least I get to enjoy cheaper energy prices for my gaff in France thanks to EDF's domestic tariffs being subsidised by their profits made in overseas markets.

Yep - but it's just the illusion of competition - a fake "market" to make it seem that you get your energy from one of a number of suppliers - when in reality it's generated and distributed by the same system, regardless on the Company name that appears on your bill. It's f*cking ludicrous, to be honest - imagine how much money, time and effort is involved splitting up the revenues and the costs *Plus, of course, the profits that are stripped out of the process - all that resource would be better spent providing the service to the consumer. Yet we're supposed to believe the "Public bad - Private good" mantra.

She liked the single market that EU membership provided. But sadly her Tory pals betrayed her and now it's just a long lost memory.
