Re: Captain Tom Dies
It's very sad that the old chap died , his daughters were called to his bedside near the end allegedly , I have 2 friends in hospital facing death at the moment ( pneumonia and cancer ) and they are allowed no visitors whatsoever

Must have misread it. I will try again.BiggsyMalone wrote: ↑Wed Feb 03, 2021 10:24 amNo, that’s clearly not what he’s sayingMax B Gold wrote: ↑Wed Feb 03, 2021 10:23 amSo your basically saying he had to die of something. Thanks for that.Dunners wrote: ↑Wed Feb 03, 2021 10:17 am
I may be wrong, but I gather he missed out on the initial roll-out as they were on holiday in Barbados (which was allowed at that time). And then, after coming back, he became unwell and developed pneumonia (possibly because of Covid), which prevented him from receiving the vaccine.
BTW the British Empire controlled approx 25% of the world's land mass not the 75% you quoted earlier.
As for the Empire itself I wasn't defending it merely pointing out an uncomfortable contradiction. I would never defend the British Empire.
As for racists wanting new arrivals from the Empire sent back I also note that many old migrants who have been here for years, were until recently, being forced to return to the Caribbean islands by a Conservative government.

Hmmm, try this. Imagine that the reasons he was sent to Burma are irrelevant, completely irrelevant. Just focus on the fact that all the soldiers who were sent to Burma had no choice in the matter, they were in the Army during wartime and they had to do as they were told.BiggsyMalone wrote: ↑Wed Feb 03, 2021 5:31 amSent there to defend a country we colonised. How heroicBoniO wrote: ↑Tue Feb 02, 2021 11:59 pmQuite amazing how you’re so happy to demonstrate your abject stupidity and ignorance. He went to Burma because he was sent there, he didn’t have a choice in the matter, like any other soldier who was posted.BiggsyMalone wrote: ↑Tue Feb 02, 2021 11:45 pm
Who cares. He was over there defending a place we colonised and getting a nice tan in the process. You think he was over there defensing the great Burmese people? Or the interests of the Empire.
80 years later, he has a walk around his garden and gets knighted. Do me a f*cking favour.
He wasn't there "getting a suntan", he was there under orders, and Burma saw plenty of action against the Japanese. It was not a nice place to be (putting it mildly).
Clearly, you're either being deliberately offensive about one man's war service, or you are incredibly thick. Or both.

Far be it for me to throws any crumbs into this biscuit fight, but it was also my understanding that families were unable to visit dying relatives in hospital. Is that right? Was Captain Tom in a hospital that did allow this?
(I'm not begrudging his family the chance to see him to say their goodbyes, by the way)

Who could begrudge a 100 year old man the holiday of a life time?

Re: Captain Tom Dies
He was an elderly man doing who achieved a great deal in his life and the fundraising fete was a massive amount of icing on the cake of his life.
The vile abuse in here is uncalled for. The usual unpatriotic Remoaners at work, they cannot help themselves sadly. Cannot respect a man who could be their Grandfather or Great Grandfather at that which reflects their own failings in life.
Having said this, I feel there is an over-exuberant ‘Lady Diana’ outpouring of vented up grief here. Knighthoods, statues, military promotions, band-wagon jumping eagerness to err from perspective. Newspapers and rubbish day time shows using his story as ‘stocking fillers’ is crass.
He was an example to all, the ere are many unsung heroes out there who quietly do good in life. Let’s just respect Sir Tom for his life and what he has done and remember him as a good man.

It isn’t irrelevant. As I said, if he was in Europe then fair play but he wasn’t.BoniO wrote: ↑Wed Feb 03, 2021 10:35 amHmmm, try this. Wondered how this thread could possibly be made toxic, didn't expect it to take the 'what war record, Burma was a doddle and we shouldn't have been there anyway' turn.

Back on topic, Boris has announced a clap for Tom Moore at 6.00 tonight.
Now as a full on yoghurt knitting socialist lefty I'll be bypassing Boris's bandwagon hijacking wheeze and instead will be celebrating his life in an alternative manner by having a crap for Tom Moore at 6.00 tonight.
I'm hopeful that I'll be able to produce a Sir TM lookalike or failing that a turd that looks like a zimmerframe. Subject to the results, I'll put a pic up later.

Vanguard self storage at Hangar Lane have their flags at half mast for him. f*cking bonkers.
Re: Captain Tom Dies
Not just a 100 year old man though, he had money, which is what really rankles with the usual suspects.
Sad to see the thread go this way, but not unexpected.

He also got dengue fever, which is probably too heavy a price for a vitamin d overload.BiggsyMalone wrote: ↑Wed Feb 03, 2021 1:43 pmI didn’t say it was a doddle. So what? Plenty of Brits go abroad every year and are happy to pick up an infection or two in their pursuit of vitamin D.

Ah well, he came home and ran a successful company. Did so well that he managed to retire to Spain. That dengue fever really stopped him.Mistadobalina wrote: ↑Wed Feb 03, 2021 1:51 pmHe also got dengue fever, which is probably too heavy a price for a vitamin d overload.BiggsyMalone wrote: ↑Wed Feb 03, 2021 1:43 pmI didn’t say it was a doddle. Fair play to the bloke for his life but he ain’t Princess Diana and the reaction to his death is utterly bizarre.

Re: Captain Tom Dies
I was reluctant to post on this topic, as apparently the ole boy was a well loved geezer. But my take on this has many points which I think are worth bearing in mind. 1 He came from a well-off family, that tends to ameliorate your way through life, hence he obtained his century. 2 Most UK geezers if they had reached 100 years today, could look back on some War time achievement, sadly most passed away quite a long time ago. 3 His family did a absolutely fabulous job of promoting his garden walk and getting other people to cough up their money, for the NHS ( I am pretty sure their business acumen helped them gain all their publicity ). 4 From a distance his efforts looked pretty good as he dragged himself around the garden with gritted teeth- but I know plenty of people who have to do the same, just to get on with their life and their families don't go searching for publicity.
My take is, I would advocate quietly that everyone pay a little more income tax or similar to fund the NHS. That way the true heroes could be paid a decent wage. But the truth is people would be howling with rage at having to fork out some of their hard earned money- be that it, may only be a comparatively piddling amount.
I seem to remember some time ago Bojo caused some outrage by saying that people had got too sentimental and all this public outpouring of grief was a load of baloney. He was fiercely criticised. Therefore stand-by for Bojo to announce the ole boy is gonna get a full State Funeral. Just think of all the extra votes that would get him!

People found a positive rallying point at a very dark time and he's one of a shrinking pool of ww2 vets. I get that there's an overreaction but seems odd to be contrary about him.BiggsyMalone wrote: ↑Wed Feb 03, 2021 2:11 pmAh well, he came home and ran a successful company. Anyway, if you're gonna be, think you're on firmer ground knocking him for this Barbados trip.
