The same people bully Ling. The same people see it differently. It is dull now. Just leave it.

I did and he was no different to now.Ronnie Hotdogs wrote: ↑Sun Dec 13, 2020 5:19 pmNo,THAT is why he should never have been signed.PoliticOs wrote: ↑Sun Dec 13, 2020 3:10 pm And THAT is why he should move on. It's 100% the wrong environment for him and he can't and won't escape the connection with his Dad. He isn't my type of player at all, but he was far better at Dagenham and actually offered something fairly dangerous there. Plus he could play when playing CM in our YT. That player, with that sort of confidence and not constantly looking to just do enough would have been fine (but not my first choice). It's just a bad environment for him to be in.
I’ve no idea what he was like in his 25 career games or whatever it was at Dagenham, I never saw him so can’t comment.

Widdowson had a lot of the ball but too often he gets a nosebleed when going forward and seems incapable of going for goal/crossing the ball.
The team played well and deserved to win

The last sentence hits the nail on the head.BiggsyMalone wrote: ↑Mon Dec 14, 2020 11:22 amLing makes the same mistakes every week and other players have to cover for him all the time. The fact is, he gets extended runs in the side no matter how poorly he plays. Akinola was bombed out after a bad performance.Harlow wrote: ↑Mon Dec 14, 2020 10:28 am This is seriously p*ssing me off. When Newport scored there were 4 players near the scorer, not one of them tried to close him down as he shot. Orient are on a decent run, Since Ling has been back he has scored a couple of goals (one given to Wilkinson), we have lost twice, one of those to an inform League 1 team (beat Plymouth 3-0 on Saturday). It is a team game, we are a team, all players get it wrong sometimes but the attention on Ling is nonsense. Does anyone know the instructions Sam is playing to? Boss seems to know what he is doing.
Let's stop undermining him, get behind the team, of course we will have moans and groans (after we beat Bradford I asked if we were awful), that is part of it but not this wholesale slagging off of one player. We are in our best position for years, lets go for it!!!
He is having a run now so his Dad can justify giving him a new contract in January.
It will be sold to us on the grounds of maintaining squad stability and his versatility as a player, seeing as he can fill in at left back or CB or CM when needed.PoundhillO wrote: ↑Tue Dec 15, 2020 7:35 amThe last sentence hits the nail on the head.BiggsyMalone wrote: ↑Mon Dec 14, 2020 11:22 amLing makes the same mistakes every week and other players have to cover for him all the time. Just having a run in the team where he hardly touches the ball in many games and ambles about with no urgency is not good enough to renew his contract by any rational thinking person.
Ronnie Hotdogs wrote: ↑Sun Dec 13, 2020 2:54 pmThis is true but I dont think it’s down to the reasons people are making out. His whole game is based on not making a mistake. Now that might sound like a decent philosophy but it’s not. It’s most noticeable when we have the ball, trying to play it out from the back, he hides behind the winger marking him. We never break out down the right hand side, it’s always through Widdowson. And when he does get the ball, he will always play the easy ball inside to Coulson or Cisse/Hector or Vigaro, rather than taking responsibility and looking for Wilko or DJ or Jobi etc further ahead. It’s true that he rarely gives the ball away, his stats probably look great, he just passes the buck for someone else to go long.Chicken Dhansak wrote: ↑Sun Dec 13, 2020 1:53 pm I don't wish to be a Ling hater but I draw your attention to the build up of Newport's goal. As the ball is played up their left wing everybody is
sprinting back, either to carry the attack on or defend it, take a look at Ling, he is just ambling along like he's on a Sunday morning jog.
First priority signing must be a decent right back who can defend, run a bit faster and has more interest in the game.
In the build up to the goal yesterday, the ball goes into his channel. But as his man is upfield with him, he’s content with that. He’s doing his job of marking the left winger so in his mind hasn’t made an error. It’s not that he strolls back lazily, or has been caught upfield attacking (obviously not), it’s simply that he’s making sure his job is done of staying with his man.
Whereas a natural defender or team player without that mindset is busting a gut to get back in, then worry about who to pick up.

He has no idea how the action will pan out, where the ball will drop, what will happen next. You break a neck to get back in and help out your fellow defenders. Especially when it's you that's f**ked up and given the ball away with a stupid throw in the first place.
the ball & because nobody satyed where they were
the ball just goes back to the opposition & have control &
Exert more pressure. A good tactician will amble back
hoping 1 of his team mates clears the ball & the ambler then
has the opportunity to relieve pressure on his defence
as the midfield were sucked back into the box .
As for throw ins
Sams perfectly disguised bad throw in in the 2nd half allows the
Newport player to think he has averted danger with a hoof upfield .
Cunningly, Sam Lings Genius knew Dan Happes Immaculate hoof
Back upfield would cause mayhem in Newports defence as they couldnt
Deal with DJ & Brophs who finished Excellently.
So Sams presence & Participation led directly to a 4th win out of 5 .

It took Ling tonight 15 minutes and 1 second to have his 12 touch of the ball. Massive improvement from his 12 touches in a whole game that I commented on. The reason why I counted that game because he didn’t touch the ball for the first 10 minutes, so I took note.
I'm not watching, but good to hear. Although it's not all about how many touches, the answer to the question by the way is an average of 20-40 touches a game, so it's not actually all that ridiculous. I think most people would probably guess at 100. I'd be really chuffed with a result tonight, I don't have us down to win.Dohnut wrote: ↑Tue Dec 15, 2020 6:52 pmIt took Ling tonight 15 minutes and 1 second to have his 12 touch of the ball. A measure of how much more involved he has become.
Younger members on this forum seem to think that the modern players are far better than the ones of days gone by, ok that is their opinion. So who of those of us who saw the 1969-70 promotion side would swap right back Mick Jones for Sam Ling and Dennis Rofe for Joe Widdowson ?PoliticOs wrote: ↑Tue Dec 15, 2020 7:28 pm Yeah I actually just don't really care anymore. I don't even rate Sam Ling. I'm just a bit bored of how its not uncommon for a right back to not be that involved anyway, particularly one of limited attacking ability, so we could find pretty disastrous stats for most of them but we have to make everything about Ling so here we are. I'm not even watching.
What was Ling Vs Brophy in the first 10, when Doh commented?
That is your opinion but I do not share it. You cant tell me that Dennis Rofe and Mick Jones, full of action, fast overlapping full backs, did less running etc than Sam Ling who hardly breaks a trot most of the game and Joe Widdowson who rarely ever ventures out of his own half !PoliticOs wrote: ↑Tue Dec 15, 2020 7:58 pm I'm not sure if many will argue that third tier championship winning full backs, and club legends, would be worse as actual footballers than two poor fourth tier full backs.
But the lads of today would be able to last 90 minutes, those of 50 years ago wouldn't. It's just a different game now, Sid.
I did share your opinion that they are better footballers. Not sure your comparison is overly fair. Why didn't you choose some unknown full backs from a comparable season in the Fourth Division?Sid Bishop wrote: ↑Tue Dec 15, 2020 8:16 pmThat is your opinion but I do not share it. Todays Os players are hardly supermen are they ! Dennis Rofe played in the First Division for many seasons as first choice left back for a very fine Leicester City team, also played for Chelsea and Southampton, no contest in comparison to Joe Widdowson.
