O's players you thought were rubbish but other people rated

Going back many years now, but I never rated Bill Roffey. My Dad loved him, so we'd have many arguments about him.

I may be wrong but think some people rated Adam Boyd.
For me he was a lazy luxury player whose goals to games ratio made him look better than he was due to penalty taking.

Agree 100% with this. I hated Adam Boyd because he was a lazy **** who only really looked up for a game when playing his old club, Hartlepool. Tall, but could barely get off the ground to attempt to head the ball. I got so angry with his lazy performances that my wife, to this day, still refers to me 'Boyding' players if I moan about them.

Which player came on at Southend and was himself substituted not long after? Anyone remember?

Was that Josh Low. I think he was also described as a 'country boy' - whatever that means.

Wow now that’s a mad statement to make. I’d go as far to say he’s the best left back I’ve seen down Brisbane road, for the older guys I never saw Rolfe play for us or at least I don’t remember seeing him play.

Yeah and he is very highly rated at each club. I'm not saying at all he can't make it, but I actually think he won't. I just don't think he is as good as people think.

he was, he played as a striker, but I ask you, as a frontline striker, how many goals did he score when he got the chance of a one on one
with the opposition goalkeeper?

Fans liked him because he had an interesting first name that they could use instead of his surname (the opposite to normal football naming convention). Also overrated because he was from our youth team, in the same way as our fans still do now.

I recall in the early days the my source at the club thought he was a real talent and would fetch big money very quickly.

He did exceptionally well to make a career in the lower divisions. I agree with Apple Wumble that when he bulked up his style changed and the more physical approach was difficult for lower division defenders to cope with.

Did I ever mention that I saw him score against Carlisle on a cold Saturday afternoon.

To an extent Jabo did get a free pass due to coming through the youth set up. I don't really have a problem with that. He had days when he was simply fantastic ( v Fulham in the FA cup springs to mind) and I think fans put up with how frustrating he could be because he was unpredictable and had undouted talent. Carlisle fans think the world of Jabo. He scored quite a few goals for them and had his best goal tally in season scoring 17. It's clear though that he became a better player after leaving us.

I remember Martin ling saying in an interview that Jabo was a lovely bloke but completely un-coachable in that he'd appear to take it all on board and then go off and do something totally unpredictable in a match. Assuming you don't count the predictable outcome of his one-on-ones with the goalkeeper, obviously!
