This whole "won the argument" thing: it was a clumsy turn of phrase, but there was a bit of a valid point buried in there. Labour espoused economically left policies which, as evidenced by the Tories signalling a shift leftwards economically, suggest the public are not as right-leaning as some would have us believe.

The Tories have struck that election sweet spot; economic left of centre/socially right of centre. They partially did this to attract votes from Labour. And it was easier for them to make the economic shift that it will be for Labour to make a shift to the right on social policies.

This is not being accepted by any of the leadership candidates or the majority of the membership. And that is why Labour will not only remain out of power for the foreseeable future, but it could yet prove terminal. And maybe that's a good thing, as the collapse of Labour could pave the way for a new and meaningful workers movement. Although, what emerges in such a vacuum isn't always benign.

Starmer’s not a disaster yet has been the least impressive performer of the remaining 3, but if the bookies have got it right he’s an odds-on shoe-in.

Nandy has been the best media performer, but her “blue labour” style politics are a bit dodgy for me. If we’re going to stick with Reform via Labourism, I think RLB (with Raynor as deputy) will do the best job, as her politics are sound and she comes across well 1 to 1, although I’ll grant she’s competent at public oration but not spectacular.

With our FPTP system, I’d rather Labour stayed leftish rather than cynically tack to the vacuous centre - and cuts deals with Libs, Greens and Nats at elections as needs be so they don’t cannibalise each other at election time.

Keir now a certainty. Isn’t it time for Nandos and Corbyn’s acolyte to concede defeat now?
