I think it really does boil down to people thinking it won't be them that gets shat on so sod it. Let someone else pick up the tab. In response to that I'm reminded of Martin Neimoller's old prose poem...

You can’t blame those fooled into voting for these scumbags. And insulting th m isn’t going to win them back either.
