Went to China a couple of years ago. The guide boasted that Shanghai has more millionaires per square mile than any other city in the world. The fact that it also contains a multitude of beggars ignore the them and us culture that was evident.

And what a mega city I saw. Not to mention shopping areas for the affluent.
China a New order is a great series to show how China has changed , yet still stayed the same in some small ways.

Your quote on the beggars reminds me of a time when The US of A sent a $1,000,000 to poland as aid for something which i cant quite remember what for,
As he felt this was an insult , the polish president sent a Million mattresses to the U.S for there homeless..

In other words if.you can only give a $1,000,000 you are in trouble, so here are some mettresses for your homeless.

Imagine the richest nation in the world have another poor country getting its mattresses for it.
Pretty sure that never happened.

Poland Offering Blankets To U.S. Homeless

May 14, 1986

WARSAW, Poland (AP) _ Poland, piqued by U.S. Senate stipulations on powdered milk for Poles affected by the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, announced Tuesday it will give 5,000 blankets and sleeping bags to the homeless of New York City.

Jerzy Urban, the communist government’s chief spokesman, also said Poland would require that the blankets and sleeping bags be handed out by private charities rather than U.S. officials.

In New York, Mayor Edward I. Koch called the Polish offer foolish and said the city’s homeless are provided with shelter, food and medical service. He suggested the sleeping bags be donated instead to the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts.

Urban’s announcement was coupled with a denunciation of ″unfriendliness″ by the Senate in the way 50,000 tons of surplus powdered milk was offered to Poles.

The Senate passed a resolution May 6 calling for powdered milk to be shipped to help replace milk tainted by radiation from the April 26 nuclear accident in the Soviet Ukraine.

In passing the resolution, the U.S. lawmakers stipulated that the aid be routed through church and other charitable groups to assure that it was distributed without regard to political considerations.

Urban said the Senate resolution treats ″Poland as a whipping boy and making improvement of relations more difficult.

″Sending milk to Poland could have been a gesture of friendship, but unfortunately it was contaminated worse than the milk of Polish cows contaminated with (radioactive) iodine. ... It was contaminated with unfriendliness,″ he said.

Urban accused the Senate of ″questioning the good intention and honesty of Polish authorities″ by insisting the powdered milk be distributed by private organizations.

He said Poland would accept the powdered milk, but would first test it to make sure it was suitable for children.

Saying Poles were shocked to read about the ″many thousands of homeless people″ who sleep in the streets of New York City, Urban said the Polish government had decided to help the poor in the United States.

″I’ve been authorized to say that the Polish side ... out of humanitarian motives has decided to give the homeless of New York City 5,000 blankets and sleeping bags,″ he said.

Urban said that given ″the antipathy of President Ronald Reagan’s administration″ toward helping the poor, Poland would insist the blankets and sleeping bags be distributed by a non-governmental charity.

He said the Polish government did not request any aid from the West after the nuclear accident that sent a cloud of radiation over much of Europe, tainting some milk and other fresh foods.

Urban said donations cannot compensate for losses Poland faces because of the ban on fresh food imports from Eastern Europe imposed by the 12-member European Common Market.

The ban is ″without any justification,″ Urban said. He estimated it would result in a loss of at least $50 million in food exports in May.

Urban said Poland has arranged to buy powdered milk from Western Europe because of a temporary shortage caused by increased demand, and that the government appreciates the shipments of powdered milk sent by private agencies in the United States and Western Europe.

The Roman Catholic Church in Poland on Monday began distributing 50 tons of powdered milk airlifted to Warsaw by Americares, a private U.S. relief agency, as well as 56 tons donated by West German Catholic groups.

Polish farmers have been prohibited from allowing their dairy cows to graze outdoors because of the radioactive fallout.

Koch told reporters in New York, ″I think the enormous tragedy which has occurred in the Soviet Union and some of which has spilled over into Poland and other countries ought not be played with politically. ... And the reason they sent 5,000 sleeping bags is to make a political point, is foolish.

″It happens the homeless in the city of New York have beds and sheets and blankets and medical care and three meals a day in facilities with showers all made available to them. And everybody knows that. When we say homeless, it doesn’t mean they don’t have a place to sleep at night.″

He added, ″So my suggestion, so as not to embarass the Polish government, is that they give those sleeping blankets and bags to the Boy Scouts and the Girl Scouts. And that would be a good way to distribute them without political rancor, without seeking to engage in upsmanship

I think it's going to end in a bloodbath fairly soon. The wife's family is from Hong Kong and the pro-democracy demonstrations are increasing. The local HKG Police are almost to a man are on the side of the demonstrators and Beijing are drafting in police from the mainland and they are being told the protests are minor with few people involved.

Nothing could be further from the truth. It won't be long before the Peoples' Liberation Army roll in the T-72's and the slaughter begins. There's little the west can do. The PRC are too strong these days and simply don't care about the backlash.
