Why wouldn't independent budget watchdog the OBR back up Reeves' claim about the £22 bn black hole?

Because it wasn't given the full details?

The Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) has uncovered £9.5 billion in spending pressures that it was not made aware of ahead of Jeremy Hunt’s fiscal statement in March, and has said that its judgment on spending would have been “materially different” had it had access to this information

So is the OBR's £9.5bn black hole different to the chancellor's £22bn black hole or are they part of the same black hole?

Yes. Will more money suddenly appear.
Yes. If there isn’t an opt out option for those with power, influence and money, then yes, more money will suddenly appear.
So then we need to ban private schools completely. That will never happen. We are way beyond that making a difference. Ill educated children become ill educated parents who produce more ill educated children. The mistakes in education, lack of funding , can be traced back to the last century. It will take another 50 years to pull it around if changes were made now. Putting VAT on private school education is vindictive
How so? It's a business providing a service and should be treated the same as everyone else.

Look after the pennies & the pounds will, oh what'd the end of that famous saying?
Tim Martin looks after drinkers everyday of the year, often with far more than a penny.

Go into most pub chains and it will be hard to identify the penny you save. You have more chance of saving by looking for small change on the floor , most people cannot be bothered to pick up on the way to the pub.

She kept going on about portacabins as classrooms. I had one as a classroom in the 60’s when Labour were in power. They were warmer and smelt great as new. The kids loved them!

Labour are a party of rhetoric, sound bites and promises they don’t keep, that’s politics, they are not alone. Though of late they have taken it to new high levels.

But what we got was typical Labour. Tax and spend. Huge borrowing too. Have we just witnessed a Liz Truss moment or inspirational changes? Time will tell of course. In the meantime plenty will suffer as a consequence. Let’s hope it’s worth the pain.

My main takeaway on the budget, from reading right-wing online commentators, is that I never knew how many of them were just sooooooo concerned with the plight of small, family run, farms.

Not sure why farmers are so stressed about finally having to pay inheritance tax. All they need to do is send their offspring to the local state school and used the private schooling fees saved to pay the bill when they snuff it. It’s not as if Walter needs a decent education to drive a combine, is it?

I like joined up thinking from Labour on this.

Quite simple gift the farm to the kids at retirement and live 7 years. Oh the kids don’t want to farm but would love the asset tax free.

Honestly, would love to understand the view. They’ve had their 14 years of tories who have low taxes (although didn’t) and promotes the individual…and the country is on its knees. Selfishness manifested in every single way possible.

And there’s a new government with some pretty meak tax measures that only affects the people who can afford it and they are up in arms, the poor things.

I’m sure the banks on the Isle of Man are extra busy today

Most will suffer as a result of this budget. The only group that won’t will be civil servants as is usual with most Labour governments. Borrow loads and throw it down the pit of sh*t that is the wasteful public service sector

Typical Labour trying to enhance equality by taxing something that should be abolished.

If only Labour hadn't taken a £4m bribe from that offshore venture capitalist fund they could have removed the favourable tax treatment of the "carried interest" which billionaire venture capitalists benefit.

They seemed very keen to abolish it and were always blabbering on about it pre election.Wonder what changed their minds?
