Graeme Souness who won 5 league titles & 3 European Cups said something similar in 1 of the documentaries on Cloughie.

Asked the question about taking a small midlands team to the heights of league champions & twice European champions , he would be hard pushed to disagree cloughie wasnt 1 of if not the best.

Carlton Palmer was a Midfirelder
Mark Wright was also a defender.

I listed 2 strikers who are arguably the 2 best managers in English Footnball.

Come on Des keep up with.the thread.

Not if he hasn't been paid in months.

Well I suppose the budget times x 50 compared to what Clough had to spend has got nothing to do with it.

No doubt Campbell.performed a minor miracle in saving Macclesfield from relegation last Season. There's obviously a lot of grief going on with staff not being paid and a number of players suing .the club this week. He clearly can't see the situation improving so he's called it a day.
Under the circumstances he's done a great job.

He was really good mates with Mark Warren back in the day, so if it was in he 90s when he was playing for us, it’s very possible.

Exactly, no-one would give him a shot elsewhere so he took on a task most thought a lost cause and turned it around. Earnt his stripes and deserves a shot at a more stable club to see what he's capable of building in a longer-term project.

This thread is one reason football fans should never be allowed to run a football club.
On Saturday we were beaten by a "pub side & favourites for relegation"
6 days later we want their manager to be boss at Orient 😂

If a manager can inspire a "pub side & favourites for relegation" to beat Orient by three goals, then he wouldn't be the worst candidate.

Never a pub side. With Campbell in charge they would have done OK - certainly not relegation.

However Campbell achievement last year was just tremendous as everyone agrees
I hope RE is successful but only time will tell

Campbell must have that special quality to inspire players because what he achieved could not of been through any other way

If I remember the greatest manager was Brian Clough and he did not start very well at Hartlepool in his first season

Ferguson also had a poor first season and he nearly got sacked

It's just not fair to create more pressure on everyone at Lofc by not letting RE settle in and let him have a fair go.

Well said Conkles.

There is no pressure as such and I am sure he will be given a fair run, but he has been named as "interim" head coach. The hope is that he gets a few good results early on and shows he is a good choice, but if it doesn't work out he has been told he can return to being an assistant.

I see no harm in writing about Sol Campbell as a potential replacement if the above comes to pass.

Reading above I see Clough is spoken of re 1 team, he done it with 2 teams,
Something Ferguson has not done so no fluke,
Clough never had a quarter of the money Fergies had to spend,

Maybe not in England, but Aberdeen's toppling of the Old Firm shouldn't be discounted. Scottish football was more superior back then. 3 titles and a cup winners cup isn't bad.

Totally agree he maybe comes 2nd
But there has been no one on earth who has equalled what Clough has done so Fergie is behind him,
Ludicrous to think otherwise & if you do then you have not read fully about Cloughs achievements,
Fergie has had the cash to maintain the dream, Clough went the other way.

Going off topic..

Fergie or Shankly ?

Bonkers thread. Sol Campbell is definitely "one of the greatest minds in football" and the comedy value of appointing him would be worth it as long as he left at the end of the season and we didn't get relegated. So yeah, I'm in.
