I thought it was compulsory but I’ve seen a few players recently either not wearing them or wearing something really small.
Admittedly I was being a little flippant with that comment. I don’t know if it’s the impact that got him or the subsequent twisting of the ankle. However I don’t think him wearing some decent shin pads would have done him any harm.

The same can be said for the Bolton player who got kicked by Happe.

It’s not unlike wearing a seatbelt these days. Not exactly much trouble so use it.

Inviting injury without them.

Yes, I agree Windy, you often see players wearing these ‘mini pads’ just under the knee and they offer zero protection.
Back in the day when I played I remember my shin pads went from my ankle to just under my knee 😊

Clare kicks the geezer at the top of the foot, between boot and shin pads. Attributing blame the small shin pads as a justification for bad challenges is mental.

Maybe they should wear concrete boots, to stop that sort of challenge being dangerous

No, but they certainly protect a players shins , which is what they’re intended for.
Clare caught their guy on his foot of course, but modern boots don’t offer much protection.
