I'm still on one of the first exercises in that book you recommended, the one where you have to follow the outline of an object with your eyes and, without looking at the paper, try and sketch it out. I have a basic vase that I've been attempting to draw and, so far, my sketches do not look like a vase.

That’s alright though, the main point of exercises like that ends up being that it makes being able to look feel like a superpower.
But the trick is eventually to just get a bit of a sense of how your eye translates stuff to the page. It’s not an easy exercise at all. I’d probably be as bad at it as anyone right now as I’m out of practice with the basics

Anyway, here’s the finished drawing:

Very good. Like the small details like the little wrinkle on her near elbow and the vein under the skin.

Pffft. That's nothing. You should see my vase.

Cheers. BTW, on the lighting, I think the light source is more from central ish left, below the model’s eye level, and closer to the viewer than the model (if that sentence hasn’t bored you to death)
I mocked up a more intense light source from both possibles, and I think the shadows are more consistent with lower left:
or
It’s the angle of the shadow on the box that swings it

I think it might be Bono in more ways than one.

Most recent one. This was supposed to be a quick one hour sketch but I got into it and spent quite a bit of time on it

In terms of well known artists, big fan of Lucien Freud and Jenny Saville. There’s an American portrait artist called Joshua Larock who is absolutely brilliant and has an incredibly delicate touch with his oil paintings.
Less well known is an artist called Daniel Maidman, whose nude sketches I love and I would like to be ten percent as good as he is.
I’ve got a real affection for commercial illustrators outside of the fine art world too, though - Iain McCaig’s illustrations I particularly like.
In terms of digital painting, while he doesn’t work in the same style as me, there’s a guy called Nikolai Lockertson who takes digital painting to another level.
There’s also a graffiti artist called Dan Kitchener who I love, who also does these impressionistic urban landscape digital paintings - the simplicity of them, but building up to a complex image, is brilliant.
Also, there’s a student who did the same illustration degree as me, named Yukina Tokumoto who does the most beautiful sketches of daily life you’ll ever see. She just sits on location and draws, and her work has to be seen to be believed.
Also a writer and illustrator named Joff Winterhart, draws these incredibly expressive character drawings in his graphic novels. Check out “driving short distances” if you like that sort of thing (it’s a graphic novel but it’s not superheroes. It’s about a guy who gets a dead end job working with a guy whose job involves driving between industrial estates, selling something (he’s not sure what)

My thoughts exactly . Should’ve drawn her with some more meat on her . Apart from that it’s another extremely good drawing

Yeah it’d definitely be a better drawing if I just decided not to draw the model how she looks.
Thanks for the tip

Just looked up larock whose stuff is mental. Will look up the others.
Love Freud. I went to an exhibition a few years ago of his and I just stared, close up at some of his drawings and paintings and they still defied belief. Just able to capture something ethereal and intense

I'm not sure these drawings are saying much artistically, other than revealing some of your kinks. I'm concerned you may be operating some sort of casting couch, with middle aged women being your victims.

The idea of art having to “say something” isn’t really the sort of thing I’m interested in - for me, I like art because of the aesthetics of it, and if I want it to say something, it’s usually when it’s in service of a narrative/an illustration, rather than something I’d hope would be analysed by people into such things as “meanings” behind art works.
Bang to rights on the kinks though - how many can you spot?

Wish I could draw / sketch half as well as that. Although, Mrs OMAB would not see the artistic side if I was in a room with a naked lady.
