I mean, my previous post was sort of nonsensical. I don’t actually think it makes sense to talk about any band being ‘the best’ — music isn’t a sport. That said, I’m curious as to whether there’s a British band you consider ‘better’ than the Beatles?

Can’t think of one I enjoy more.
The Smiths. Better songs overall. Better lyricist. Better instrumentalists. Rated probably the correct amount.

I’m not saying the Beatles are sh*t. Just that they aren’t the perfect great band most people claim. Their best albums have dud songs on them. A handful of great and iconic songs, nothing more.
😂

I’d be hard-pressed to name a more overrated band than The Smiths. Whiny student poetry fronted by an absolute f*cking bell-end.
I'd give you Radiohead. Thom Yorke can shove his whiny vocals where the sun don't shine.

The fact that Radiohead are demonstrably the better band doesn’t bother you?

You can’t demonstrate that a band is better than another band, because “better” isn’t quantifiable in any meaningful way. The only even vaguely quantifiable way is “technical musical proficiency” and I would bet good money that there are no members of Radiohead who believe that technical proficiency is anything other than a means by which they make music which they hope resonates with the people who like it. Personally, Radiohead I think are alright, but to pluck a band out of the air, Pixies are, for me, the better band. By what criteria would you say I’m objectively wrong or right?

The Smiths: Just a band.
The Pixies: Just a band.
Radiohead: Just a band

Really like all three of these.

I’m too young to have ever had the chance to see The Smiths (or The Beatles, obviously) but I first saw Radiohead and a freshly reunited Pixies live in 2003/2004. I enjoyed both, but Pixies edged it for me.

Don’t really rate anything Pixies have released since, though, whereas I really liked In Rainbows and some of Radiohead’s subsequent stuff.

I think we can probably all agree that Morrissey is a penis, though

He may be a penis, but some of his more recent albums are decent.

I saw Morrissey at glasto about 12 years ago. I really like his music but by the time I left his set I felt completely deflated after he spent an hour moaning at various stuff between songs. Actually ruined my night 😂

I think the Beatles deserve to be recognised for their groundbreaking music
I am also a big fan of the Smiths
But I have never tried to compare them
It’s like chalk and cheese

I think Joy Division were brilliant and could have gone on to wider recognition but for Ian Curtis untimely death
