Smyth can be replaced more easily I think. Goals scored 10 and only one after Xmas. The key was defence tight as a nats ar*e.
Think you are right.

We often let emotion get in the way of facts. Smyth was fantastic to watch and I wish he’d signed. But the reality is, like Richie said, we have to replace around 10 goals and say 10 assists which isn’t impossible. When you consider having a player available for every game without managing minutes will also help attain the levels we need from his replacement
It's more than just 10 goals and 10 assists.

Smyth occupied opposition defences because of his pace and threat and that gave others more space.
The Smyth revisionism is something else. I can understand why RW says these things - we do need to move on - but his impact last season was incredible. He scared opposition defences shitless, and that anxiety made them more vulnerable generally. When his fitness started to let him down a bit in the New Year was when our own form dipped a bit.

‘ signing an initial one-year loan deal with Richie Wellens' side.’

Does that imply we might have an option to sign him at the end of the loan deal?

Do we know if Ipswich have a recall clause in the loan agreement?

yes they do, like last year. It's one of things that swung it in our favour.

Not happy, this option has been added in the loan deal, let’s hope it’s not an issue come Jan 🙏

Would you rather he wasn't here at all? That is the alternative.

Unexpected good news. Alleviates my suspicion O’s might struggle with the step up at bit more.

Struggle? We're a striker and a keeper away from a play off position (so long as adequate strength in depth is added at the right times).

Our attack which was weak last season is still weak and needs some big signings at the level of what's been done in CM to feel confident at this level.

Let's assume for sake of argument Agyei replaces Smyth that leaves us needing to replace...

Kelman (no replacement yet for a starter)
Smith (not replaced in Jan due to CB crisis)
Sadlier (need a third wide option to provide competition and cover for Archibald and Agyei)

Keeper is obvious that needs to be top notch plus one more CB (waiting for when the ideal solution to that re-Turns)

Now if those come in as well as we've recruited so far then we can be confident of our chances.

We'll get a forward and a winger, that'd leave us with 6 forward players for 3 positions, which is fine. It's possible we'll get the obligatory prem/champ young player who'll never make it on loan and play 3rd choice up front, but I can't remember that ever working out so don't really see the point. No need to bloat the squad early, it's a good idea to have some flexibility in the budget come January if it becomes apparent there are serious issues with the squad.

Definitely feel like we need a really good young CB on load who could step in if Happe gets injured or he or Beckles go off the boil badly.
