Been saying it for years but Kyle Walker is an awful defender. Relying on his pace to get him out of sh*t. The amount of poor positions and loose passes in the last two games has been awful. He’s got one giant mistake in him at least once a game.

Slovakia lined up with a 4-4-2 and pressed our back 4 and Rice and Mainoo. There was a massive gap between their midfield and defence in which to find Bellingham but time and again the midfield failed to do so. (Bellinghams frustration at those behind him was visible).
Zero crosses coming in from the left wing via Trippier and Foden who is a good forward but wasted playing him wide as a left winger.....which he aint !

People using luck to explain us constantly getting through the to late late knock out stages. Weird people can’t enjoy the journey.
Yesterday's performance certainly wasn't about tactical nous or quality football. Ultimately it came down to "chuck a long throw in the box at the big guys and hope it falls kindly"
There's enough quality in this squad to be playing far better than they are. Southgate has used up his get out of jail free card, he won't get another against Switzerland if they continue to play that badly.
Foden needs to be benched for starters, he's no good out wide and Southgate won't play him in the middle so take him out the XI

As Richie says, you make your own luck in football. Slovakia hardly had a touch second half. We worked hard and didn’t give up and the more you throw balls in the box the more chance that one goes in.
Agree re Foden, needs a rest or a kick up the arse

Bellingham absolutely should be playing deeper. The 4-3-3 we played with at the world cup addressed a lot of those issues. We also have Stones and Alexander Arnold who play that connecting role between defence and midfield for their clubs from a starting position of defence.
There is more than enough technically gifted players who provide that link available, and certainly enough to look more fluid and impressive than against Slovakia, Serbia, Slovenia and Denmark.

Yes agree and also Saka as left footed as you can get and played on the right wing, net result means he finds it hard to take on his full back and sling over a cross into the box. As you correctly state, apart from corners and free kicks, zero crosses into the box until the old fashioned "chuck a long throw in the box at the big guys'' the sort of tactics often used by Tony Pulis the ex Stoke City manager and his big and often used weapon was the long throw into the penalty box by Rory Delap !!

I watched the highlights of the Italy v Switzerland game again. While Italy were terrible, nothing should take away from the good performance by Switzerland. They looked solid and Vargas is going to cause us real problems.

Wrong on basically every point.
Saka plays for arsenal on the right and had a mad amount of goal contributions. He links up with odegaard and white at arsenal, which helps him.
We also put loads of crosses into the box yday. Too many probably.

Yes Saka does play on the right for Arsenal but he plays as an inverted winger, so his main game is to cut inside and use his left foot for passes inside and cutting in to dribble and take shots with his left foot. Not playing as an orthodox right winger, he also started at Arsenal as an attacking left wingback.

The Slovakian defence was eating up the crosses, though many of them were really poor and in theme with the rest of the performance were slow to be delivered. Often it was a check back inside, looking, looking then trying to clip to the far post (usually over hit).
One decent ball in was the one Kane has to be scoring, very poor he didn't even get that header on target. Has he had it too easy in the Bundesliga this season and lost a yard or two of sharpness?

He's carrying a knock picked up towards end of season, I really don't think he's fit. Germany provided 2 out of 4 finalists for the major European finals this season, it's a very good league. But he clearly isn't at it and not being helped by how much of a mess out approach play is. We've looked best when Rashford or Sterling, and to a lesser extent Shaw, has capitalized on the space Kane's dropping deep created. Noone is playing that role now.

Hold up!
You're moaning that our wide players aren't giving us width, and that they're also not coming in-field to exploit the space Kane leaves by coming short?

Different spaces. Rashford, Shaw, Sterling all maintained width and made runs in behind that stretched defences. Kane drops deep, defenders follow him, therefore there's more space to play in behind. Foden and Trippier on the other hand cut into that same space as Kane is playing in. You can see the heat maps of where we play, everything goes down the right and middle, and Saka is getting doubled up on because there is no threat from the other side.

Southgate was about a minute from his resignation yesterday, before Jude saved him.
I'm certain he will go though, at the end of the tournament.

It's a broader phenomenon. Even by the already low standards of most England fans, I don't think I've ever seen so much negative emotion surrounding our progress to the QFs. As Southgate has improved the team, the fans have got antsier.

Portugal looking pretty stifled against Slovenia. Maybe the 0-0 wasn't such a shocker.

Are the linesmen actually prohibited from putting up their flags, even for a very obvious offside?

Brilliant by the Portugal keeper, when was the last time you see a keeper with a 100% save rate in a shootout?

The routine booings post match - even mid match in lots of cases - are something else.
