French elections coming up right? They wont want to look silly.

I’ve just read the letter.

Clearly Boris has published it to salvage his image and votes and I can see why the French are pissedoff with him, but there’s not much to pick fault at with the actual content.

(Other than the idea of Serco being given the contract to pop dinghys).

Considering that lives are at stake, we should be pragmatic enough to appreciate the political situation in France and not do anything that will be counter-productive. There was simply no need to write an open letter in the first place.

Perhaps the most shocking revelation yet: the Home Office are paying £20 a pop for Chicken Shish meals for new arrivals.

A cynic would say the uk government knew the French would throw the letter back at us but they are just laying the groundwork for next year. Once we start getting a 1000 a day or possibly a lot more by April may next year Boris can turn around and say he tried everything including letters. Basically just blame the French.

And how long is it going to be before this new variant of concern is detected in France and helped across the channel by asylum seekers. The whole situation is a real mess with , seemingly, no solutions

The new variant , as i understand it, has been found in Southern Africa, which is no where near, the middle east, where the refugees ( not migrants..horrible word), are coming from.
Also, again as I understand it, the current Delta variant, was brought here by genuine visitors and British residents from India on regular flights into this country, not from refugees.
Whether you mean it or not, there's a vein of racism through your post

It’s to do with COVID , not racism. Stop being pathetic. It’s a fact that a percentage of those picked up either mid channel or in the Uk test positive.

And , of course , it’s a number of countries in the Southern half of Africa which is attached by land to the northern half of Africa. In addition to that , there is a case now from Israel so this should be a concern

Nothing to do with bigotry. As I understood it , the Kent variant was linked to asylum seekers . Not sure if there was solid proof of that but it’s worth considering

If it helps , I am happy for asylum seekers , who arrive in this manner , to stay. Just don’t want to embrace this new variant anytime soon

The variant will enter the country as others normally do via unchecked passengers at airports. But we can't inconvenience those passengers, better to blame it on asylum seekers as it's a much easier sell.
