Batsman Tom Westley has been named as the new captain of county champions Essex, succeeding Ryan ten Doeschate.

Good luck to Tom.

I think Tendo wants one last hurrah without the burden of captaincy.

Looks like he's slotting into Bopara's place - but without the burdens of captaincy. Also looks as though 2020 will be his last season - a chance to help Westley with captaincy. At 39 years old the time has come. What a servant for Essex he's been!

Interesting!

Essex have signed Australia all-rounder Moises Henriques for the defence of their T20 Blast title.

Great signing, captain of the winning Sydney sixers team

Bopara had to be replaced, at least for T20. I was starting to give up hope that someone was going to be signed. Very pleased with this, but think we still need a reliable opening batsman. I want Browne to succeed but, if Essex hadn't had so many dismal failures in their first innings and dropped batting points, that last match / fiasco against Somerset would have been academic.

I wish him every success and Essex to again do well, but it'll be a tough call to defend both titles.

When Tendo was interviewed after Essex winning the championship, he implied that last season's wickets were not prepared for teams to make big scores. He stated that some of the Essex batsmen suffered due to this and last season's stats were not their true form. Nick Browne was one of the names he mentioned so I would think he will be opening again this coming season.
On another note, it will be interesting to see if Cameron Delport returns for the T20 bash.

Further to that the ecb said no cricket before July if at all. There could well be counties that won’t make it through this crisis.

The only good thing to come out of this for cricket is getting rid of that stupid 100 competition.

Fuelled by greed and desperation and totally unnecessary.

Cricket could be back in August with socially distanced crowds. Easier to do than football

Cricket crowds are so low you wouldn't have to bother.

ONE Essex player in the 55 man England training and selection squad for this seasons matches, (Dan Lawrence) Incredibly no Place for either Porter or Sam Cook.

Maybe County Champions but still unfashionable with the upper eschalons at Lords.

Day 1 of the Bob Willis Trophy, Essex Vs Kent

Am I right in thinking that because this is separate form the usual County Championship Essex will remain champions regardless?

Winners of the Bob Willis Trophy will not be County Champions. Apart from being a different competition, with some similarities to the Championship, there is the possibility that the Bob Willis champions could be a county side in Div 2.

Essex were playing Kent behind closed doors the other day. Does anyone know the score and who won?
