Re: Tory Watch
Since Johnson is so fond of talking about Churchill, he should remember that Chamberlain stood down cause he was totally unsuited to leading a war effort. Obvious parralel there.
If this is all they could have done, then he's basically admitting he's out of his depth no?

Re: Tory Watch
If the vaccine rollout continues to be a success, then that is what the government will end up being remembered for when this is all over. The number of dead will be treated as a mere detail. Whether or not that's fair will be irrelevant.
What is more, by the time the next GE is due, any possible economic recovery will be in full swing. And the Tories will be sure to capitalise on that.
They will be further aided by the fact that Labour are still recovering from a historic defeat in 2019, which no other party has ever recovered from within an election cycle. And, unless something changes in Scotland, a Labour government will be beholden to the SNP, which will deter many English swing voters.
Johnson may yet survive this politically.

So you are saying swing voters are racists and therefore to attract their support Labour needs to double down on racist policies. Dunners:- With all these deaths, a large number of UK families will needlessly have lost people who are near & dear to them. Then, that is not even taking into account the very many people ( perhaps an even larger number ) who have been seriously ill with this noxious virus. I don't think people will quickly forget that. Then there has been the ridiculous, uncontrolled, stop-start lockdowns, causing huge frustration. People who are self-employed ( natural Tory supporters ) unable to work and not suitably reimbursed. They wont forget. People are still remembering the tw*t Dominic Cummings.
We haven't pioneered the vaccine alone. Mainly we have been first out of the block buying it. BoJo's crowing in the last few weeks about how much we are ahead in the vaccine programme compared to Europe, must have really got up the EU's nose, and could well come back to haunt him, if they put pressure on the vaccine companies. BoJo is a p-ss poor diplomat, just ask Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe in Iran, for her opinion of him.

If i thought something bigger was coming along no way. I suspect you ask a lot of the people who voted tory in the red belt in the midlands they might well say the same thing.
Been said plenty of time before but i personally thought he was very marginally the least worse of two crap options.

Re: Tory Watch
What's the point of only applying this enforced hotel quarantine period to a small number of countries? Surely it defeats the whole purpose seeing as new variants spread all over the place and often to countries that don't have the capacity to monitor for variants?

Re: Tory Watch
i suspect it's about practicalities as much as anything else. There's just nowhere near enough hotel capacity to implement this policy, even with a further reduction on the already reduced intake of international travellers. It's not a straightforward policy for any country, but it's a lot more do-able for the likes of Oz and NZ than it is for the UK.Mistadobalina wrote: ↑Wed Jan 27, 2021 5:18 pm What's the point of only applying this enforced hotel quarantine period to a small number of countries? The alternative is the Israel option, and a simple complete ban on all international flights. But considering how much we are dependant on our status as a hub, once you press that button it may prove very difficult to reverse out of. And the scarring from that decision could be permanent.
But if this does have an effect on the effectiveness of the vaccine rollout, then that could prove fatal for Johnson.

Re: Tory Watch
My neighbours both flew back from Brazil this week. Never mind the fact that they were allowed back in to the UK from one of the world’s covid hotspots (into another one, you could say), there was no enforced quarantine, no legal requirement to prove that they’re isolating, no checks on them - nothing at all. It’s a f*cking joke. They live in the flat opposite mine and we’re having to disinfect the main door each time we go in or out.
No wonder we’re at 100k and counting.

Re: Tory Watch
Sir Desmond Swayne a Tory Mp for part of the New Forest, in deep mire for questioning the Epidemic ( epidemic what epidemic ? ) He says figures have been manipulated. Seems many Tories with a bit of a brain are incandescent. Must be something in the water in Dorset, the MP who tried to block the upskirting Bill is MP for Christchurch ( he blocked a pile of popular Private Members Bills ). Must be one of Thories drinking partners.

Exactly. NZ has a small population and we have a big population. We're obviously going to have more deaths because there are more people here.George wrote: ↑Thu Jan 28, 2021 6:10 pmYou cannot compare the two. Also NZ is lucky in that it is an island so easily able to shut its borders and stop people with coronavirus coming into the country.
