Shows what a strict lockdown and social compliance, as well as having a left-wing government, can achieve.

Re: Coronavirus
Personally I worry about infections and deaths elsewhere. Global problem that needs a global solution if it is to be eradicated. People travel.
What has been talked about endlessly is the inaccuracies or opinions of reported numbers, in saying 50,000 you highlight this clearly, not just in the UK but across the world. No surprises to me other countries, like France and Belgium, report differently. Numbers are used endlessly by the media and as such Ferrari is quite right to highlight the issues.

In regards to the kids not going back to school until September
Personally think that this is the government kicking the ball down the road as the situation isn't going to be resolved by then and you can't keep children out of school forever. There's gonna be a generation of kids whose education if fecked.

The distancing will be well relaxed by then, which should solve the problem.
New Zealand is a remote country, pointless comparison.

All of there corona outbreak was locked down at source.
How far it is away is not necessarily the reason.
A government that has policed it well , has kept its
population fully informed & respected.

No it isn't. There isn't another Country on the planet that's a mirror copy of the UK for sure. So there can never be an exact comparison of the effect of different policies. However, what is clear is that New Zealand took decisive action quickly and held to it. The results speak for themselves.Prestige Worldwide wrote: ↑Tue Jun 09, 2020 10:06 am The distancing will be well relaxed by then, which should solve the problem.

The UK dithered and delayed and unfortunately the results also speak for themselves.

Re: Coronavirus
I wonder if the authorities can't simply have all school years repeat - so if a kid started year 3 last September, then they just start year 3 again this September. That way, they'd be getting more of the learning, rather than less. Obviously that's going to have repercussions for resources, but that'd need to be funded.JimbO wrote: ↑Tue Jun 09, 2020 9:29 am In regards to the kids not going back to school until September

Also, as my 90 year old dad likes to point out - he and his generation were evacuated for 3 or 4 years at crucial time in their education - with all the entailed disruption to their schooling, but it didn't end up with that generation being educationally f*cked.

Re: Coronavirus
It's just not as big a deal as some people are making out.
Your GCSEs only really matter for the purpose of your A-Levels/BTECs etc. And these only matter either for your first job or your University application.
For most people, if they do go to University and get a degree, this is usually only relevant for their first one or two jobs. After that it's experience and behaviours that count, or qualifications that have otherwise been attained throughout the course of their careers.
There are exceptions to this, of course, but those exceptions are an extreme minority. I'm not saying educational attainment doesn't matter - having decent grades certainly makes your life easier than not having them - but it's really not the be all and end all.

Yes NZ did very well and we did badly but doubt them having a 'left wing government' was much of a factor. For starters nobody lives or flies there.

It's also not about solely the education side of things but the social skills that they learn while being at school.Dunners wrote: ↑Tue Jun 09, 2020 11:00 am It's just not as big a deal as some people are making out.

Also what about the kids who are now in year 1 & 6 who are currently going to school in some capacity but now when they're supposed to go back in September they won't be, actually makes them going in now pointless.

Re: Coronavirus
Oh, completely. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it doesn't matter - it does. But most will cope just fine. I think your point about social interaction is a good one though. Aside from education, many kids (especially in earlier years) rely on their school as their main/only form of socialising with others. And then there's the really unfortunate kids for whom education is a means to escape dysfunctional and abusive households.JimbO wrote: ↑Tue Jun 09, 2020 11:10 amIt's also not about solely the education side of things but the social skills that they learn while being at school.Dunners wrote: ↑Tue Jun 09, 2020 11:00 am It's just not as big a deal as some people are making out.

Seen a lot of teenagers hanging around together at parks, which makes me question what the point is of their schools being shut.

The question is not WHO but WHY.UpminsterO wrote: ↑Tue Jun 09, 2020 12:24 pm Why can't there be a world health standard for measuring
It's very simple the WHO issue a directive - if a simple standard internationally can be used in commerce why can a simple counting system be used

So the kids can't go back to school as there isn't enough room. Yet kids are hanging out together anyway and people have had no qualms about protesting or going to the shops or beach. This country!

Re: Coronavirus
Listening to Noongar Radio (an Aboriginal show) today from Broome WA, they were stating how well their Coronavirus App. had been working, during the Pandemic.
It was also pleasing to note that apparently, there has not been a single positive test for Coronavirus over the past two weeks across the entire Western Australia Territory.
The thoughts that immediately sprang to mind:
- What has happened to the App. in the UK? When is it due to be introduced - if ever?
- Is there any feedback on the App. being trialled on the Isle of Wight?
- What are our daily number of Coronavirus Tests being undertaken?
As the Missis has a few days of well-earned break, I admit to not bothering with much news; or indeed undertaking a detailed Google search. However, a quick catch-up scan through the media over the past few days doesn't appear to present any clues. Yes there are various snippets; but nothing official from the Etonian Spaffer and his Circus of ?
Has this incompetent Tory Govt. actually stopped reporting the aforementioned information?
