I think anything that allows you to snark on the sidelines without ever offering an opinion of your own amuses you, so it's a very low bar you're setting.

How droll, a Guardian article from years ago on how it's tough to hit government standards on food consumption

Which part of the Kellogg report should I refer to as that seems a bit more relevant than the Guardian article?

Your shout entirely. You can even go the report the guardian article is referencing if you're genuinely interested.

Thanks, do you have any reports that aren't years old like the reports you quoted?

The Kellogs reports is over 3 years old... but thanks

I'm not overly concerned about the fact that £12bn has been spunked. I'm very concerned that the poorest of kids are not getting properly fed. If you don't feed them adequately then you can never expect them to learn when they are thinking where their next meal comes from. I'm in my 50's and part of look after us as kids was the daily milk.

Why does the school system not give free meals to all. Put up tax by the fraction it needs; don't worry about taking it from the rich or poor. We can all agree (except MP's) on feeding all kids. If the richer end of the market has their kids eating the same gruel that's being turned out, the quality of it would become a higher priority.

I think you make an important point that is missed with a lot of people taking a short term view.

Lack of food is the end result of a bigger problem, it's also the start of limited prospects in the future. It obviously doesn't stop everyone (see Rashford), but theres too many chain reactions of a child going hungry to get into that affect their future, and as a result, societies future.

Believe school meals are free up to a certain age. (Year 3?)

Free meals during a holiday would just be papering over the cracks of poverty wouldn't it?

Raised this point on the other thread- if you think the govt should feed kids during the holidays then why not every day?

I would have saved a fortune if the government fed my kids.
Still doing it now when one of them comes back from University.

You could have fed your kids very cheaply if you’d prepared meals yourself at home and shopped in the right places.

The richer end of the market - namely decision makers and MP’s kids - are not going to local primary schools with the rest of us dregs. And even if they did, you couldn’t force them to accept the schools offering, they can always take in their own lunch.

I agree with the sentiment of providing meals to all kids at school, though.

Yes, they were provided to all initially but then rolled back to just reception, year 1 and year 2 kids.

And yes, that’s a great idea, make provision during the week ends of term time as well. 👍

I would have saved even more if could have got the government to feed the pair of them for 18 years.

If a school has 900 pupils and only 700 eat the food then 1 or 2 positives could occur. The cook gets the sack for someone more capable; Or the quality of food actually improves. It may have a further benefit of bringing higher quality cooks into the education sector.

I’m pleased for you, and for them, that you didn’t have to rely on the government and worry that you’d have to send them off to school hungry. Imagine that would have been awful for you.

Would it be acceptable to audit those who claim they cannot afford to feed their children?

My sons school did it, each year had to bring in specific food, soaps, underwear and when all put together it covered all bases.

You can go to the chip shop and buy a bag of chips for £2 that’s cheap, it will fill you up, but it’s not good, nor healthy.

I was sitting in traffic on lea bridge road and there’s was a chicken shop and the window was blazed with chicken and chips 99p again it’s cheap, it will fill you up and again it’s not healthy.

Working a sixty hour week and driving 44 miles a day had something to do with it.
As i say, it is nonsense that kids are not given a bowl of cereal or porridge because of expense.

Not really.
Standard rate of pay for a print company.
What i will concede though, overtime was at time and a half and double time.
There are low wage and poor terms and conditions now.
There are many reasons for this not excluding the cheap eastern block labour that has been allowed to flood the market and drive all those hard fought agreements away.
Also, idiotic governments opening up the market to 6 billion in the far east which has destroyed well paid manufacturing jobs and the only ones left
are the ones with long hours and rubbish conditions. The minimum wage is a joke. This should be for day work Monday to Friday only.
There are companies who are getting away with paying £8.21 ph. for nightwork including weekends. No guessing who the exploited mugs are who are working there.
Even more stupid are governments propping up these jobs by subsidising this nonsense by topping up the wages.
Rant over.
so much for me being right wing.

Just got an email from the council, during the holidays they will be paying £15 cash a week for those entitled to free school meals. So it is cash.
