A link? Well, can't prove anything of course, but could be linked to the Falklands War. Assuming the VAR geezers were German, there could be a bit of payback there as well

Have Scotland just exited another tournament without having scored a single goal?
(Obviously, own goals don't count)
No.
38 years of the Scots wearing Argentina shirts, banging on endlessly about Maradonna, it’s an Argie ref who stiffs them for a stonewall penalty. Absolute theatre
A decent trade-off in my opinion. Maradona will always be considered a God in Scotland as the best player the world has ever seen and for the best goal ever seen. The one where he beat about 9 Englishmen before popping it in the net wasn't bad either

John McGinn (29) played his 66th game of the season against Hungary. No wonder he was knackered.

Was on the BBC post match analysis though saw some comments earlier where someone said the attacker was offside earlier in the buildup and that's why they didn't check it. Not sure if true but the only logical reason not to even check it given the knee contact.

As Currywurst will tell you, he plays in a pub league so is probably only covering about a 100 yards per game, so no excuse

We've got some very good players so I don't know why it' just s not clicking . The buck must stop with Southgate because I feel he's too defensive minded . We go a goal up then defend deep. .If we're to get knocked out I'd rather we went out playing attacking football

Spain look the business. They're playing a completely different 11 today to the previous games. Same formation as us, but look how the full backs and midfielders are getting forward to help in attack. Definitely comes down to what the manager has told the players to do, as we have the players to do that

Also comes down to the players available. We don't (currently) have a left back who plays like Cucarella or Grimaldo. And we don't have a Rodri (appreciate he's not playing tonight).

Scotland don't ( currently) have players like Rodri or Grimaldo or even Pele. Shame

Italy have been really poor this tournament. Thought Spaghetti would get more out of them.
This does show how absurd the 3rd place qualifying system is., as they don't deserve to get into ro16 but probably will. A format where 2/3rds of the qualifying teams get into the second round means you have to be proper toilet to get knocked out at the group stage.

Comment aged badly. Croatia you'd assume not getting through on two points.

Trippier although not a left back is attack minded, as is Walker, but they've barely got past the half way line, and Rice, is not far off Rodri.

It’s been sad watching MDs and others immutable drift rightwards these past few years but this caps it.

So he takes Shaw who hasn’t played for months, Southgate really is a plank.

They worry so much about having a right footed player playing at left back and yet persist in playing inverted wingers. They also dropped Grealish who is a natural left winger from the squad and play the left footed Saka on the right wing and now talk of playing the right footed Anthony Gordon as a left sided winger ?

Saka's natural position is right wing. Grealish is an inverted wingers. Most teams play inverted wingers these days, the point of having full backs play on their natural foots side is that you get width from their overlap whilst the inverted wingers cuts in. You've seen that tactic work for England time and time again, which makes it all the more baffling that Southgate didn't take any other left backs. It's been such a key part of our game.

I would have taken Grealish but not played him as a winger, would have played him in midfield where he played so well for Villa, but I was forgetting that old big nose plays 7 defenders. Having said that I don’t think he will tonight, if I was a betting man (which I’m not) I think he will play 3 at the back possibly 5 in midfield and dare I say it 2 up front?

Because of last night's results, England have already qualified for the next round. So it's as good a time as any to mix things up and experiment a bit.

True. Winning this group sees us playing 3rd place from groups D, E or F. Coming second sees us playing Germany.

Although, coming second in Group C (and assuming a win over Germany) does give a possibly easier route to the final. Winning Group C means England is likely to face Spain in the Quarter Final. And then the adventure ends.

WELL DONE ENGLAND. So good we qualified without playing last night. Through the group with ease. Good on the Southgate.

Group E has all 4 teams on 3 points. Now that’s a tight group
