There are plans to connect the northbank bits up, but the major problem is the Ford plant. Not sure how old this is, but it shows the proposed and existing links.

Believe a lot of the Ford plant and other industrial stuff has gone and a load of houses will be built on it shortly.

Also, the walk out of Basildon Hospital after I suffered a cardiac arrest felt pretty good too!
