He never really got a run of games in the MLS and came to us having not played in nearly 5 months, and was used to a much slower pace of football and didn’t have the luxury of pre-season to get him up to speed. I wouldn’t be writing him off as past it just yet

Given the club have only just announced that we’re keeping the academy, not sure that’s where we’re going just yet. Although all these American training camps, who knows?

No thanks - need to move on. Would only be fit for half a season anyway.

To reduce the loss this season would be my guess.

Brentford decided their academy wasn't working. They ditched it completely, losing their Premier League subsidy as a result, but also saving £1.5 million a year of the club's cash.

"If we play the same game, we're not going to win. We need to play another game," Ankersen said. "What we said is, 'OK, let's start on a completely blank sheet of paper. How can we be different here? How can we look at the system and see where the inefficiencies are?'

Am I right in thinking we're no more protected now in L2 in terms of losing young players for a pittance than we were in NL? If so just seems like we're keeping it out of emotion and "community" than what's in our financial best interests.

Yes, but we do get funding we would have lost in NL from this season onwards.

True but I doubt that even covers the costs of running it. Some people might point to Koroma as a success story but out of that group of players he was the exception rather than the rule in terms of staying with us and making an impact on the pitch.

I agree totally, I like Brentford's model.

I guess if Sotirou, Happe, Ogie, Judd and perhaps Janata and Sweeney pay off in the next year or two it would give more justification to keeping the academy.

As often happens in the forums threads, I notice the talk has started to drift from the original subject which is about the feasibility of signing Jay Simpson for the coming season. For me, not a good idea to re-sign Jay. I happen to think that he is a spent force who as @Redcard says is ''a shadow of the player he once was'' and has also not produced the goods for a few years now.
I stated my views a few times about Jay Simpson on this forum when there was talk of him re-signing for us in January, but seems like at the time, the ''Simpson will RIP it in this league'' brigade were wearing rose tinted glasses and did not take into consideration the fact that Simpson had not done anything of note since his great run of goal scoring form in the first half of season 2015/16.
I also fail to understand why it is that in the past few years, Leyton Orient have twice had players training with us in Nolan and Simpson and on both occasions the training staff not picked up at all that their fitness levels have not been anywhere near up to scratch !

We’ve needed a new PA System for years I can’t talk about other ends of the ground but in the East it’s totally inaudible and the music sounds like it’s coming from an old Sony Walkman

You'd have to be completely deluded to genuinely want Jay Simpson back again.

Why? He has got an excellent record in League two and joined us without any match fitness in January.

I think he would be a much better player if he had a chance to stay with us for a whole pre-season.

Look right he had a great record in league 2 but that was ages ago last season he had liad of chances but only scored 1 and yes its a step up in divisions but if he only scored 1goal in a confence league how many do you think he will score in league 2

Good player, "if fit", but never fit, seemingly. Even when on the pitch.

More a collector of signing on fees these days than a pro footballer. Sadly.

Exactly.

Feel sorry for Simpson. Came in and many were excited to see what he could do. I was, always rated him.

The truth, he was not fit enough, not match sharp, then got a knock. Never really had much of a chance to show what he could do, although we did see glimpses of his undoubted skills.. and he is bloody skilful.

L2. Of course he could do a job. Full preseason and he could do very nicely for us. I wouldn’t be unhappy if he got the gig. But I doubt it would happen.
