He looked better offensively on Saturday than I’ve seen in a long time but his defensive weaknesses haven’t got better. He still gets caught out too far up the pitch when there’s a turnover in play. He isn’t going to get any faster so he needs to think about his positioning more. A midfielder has to cover for him and that leaves a f*** load of space in midfield or at right back.Dohnut wrote: ↑Sun Dec 13, 2020 6:45 pm I think Ling has improved massively in his last two games. His effort is noticeably better as his taking responsibility. Widdowson despite all his critics has never been a shirker. Ling was. But that has changed recently, don’t know why, don’t care why. Just happy it has.
I noticed his absence for their goal. The extended highlights does show him lacking effort to get back. But on this occasion I’m happy to give him the doubt, following team orders, rather than being lazy. Solely based on his general effort in the game.
If he continues then I’m all for giving preference to contracted players over loan players. But it needs to continue, the Ling of old was a liability. Ling of late is adding to the team. Something has put a rocket up his arse. Hope it lasts.
Yeah, he did until he had 1 bad game at CB in a 5 man defence and hasn’t been seen since. Baffling.SouthStandPete wrote: ↑Sun Dec 13, 2020 2:25 pmChicken Dhansak wrote: ↑Sun Dec 13, 2020 1:53 pm I don't wish to be a Ling hater but I draw your attention to the build up of Newport's goal. As the ball is played up their left wing everybody is
sprinting back, either to carry the attack on or defend it, take a look at Ling, he is just ambling along like he's on a Sunday morning jog.
First priority signing must be a decent right back who can defend, run a bit faster and has more interest in the game.

Then you'd be wrong. Ling was in attack and was left stranded by a long clearance. That happens to all full-backs - unless you don't want them to support attacks at all.
Nope, you're wrong. Watch the extended highlights back.
Ling took the throw from the half way line & touchline .Ronnie Hotdogs wrote: ↑Mon Dec 14, 2020 10:26 amNope, you're wrong. Watch the extended highlights back.
Ling took a poo poo throw in and gave the ball straight back to them. At that point in time, he was level with both Cisse and 47 year old Jobi. The ball goes over his head but because his man is up the field double marking Wilko, he doesn't see the need to try and get back to help out. As far as he's concerned, it's not his job.
Compare and contrast to both Cisse and Jobi who do at least try to get back in, albeit unsuccessfully.
So why are you comparing runs to cisse & to jobiRonnie Hotdogs wrote: ↑Mon Dec 14, 2020 10:57 am But Ling doesn't have to run diagonally back to the penalty spot like a 10 year old chasing the ball.
Ronnie Hotdogs wrote: ↑Mon Dec 14, 2020 11:03 am It's because I have played football that I think I understand Lings mindset. I can remember making jumps up in standard (youth to mens, reserve to first team) and you have that period of bedding in. The same when you're having a stinker and nothing is going right. You just make sure you do the simple things, don't go looking for the ball when your team have it and just ensure you don't let your man beat you when they have it. Effectively making the game 10 v 10. Then as you become comfortable at that level, or your touch and confidence returns, you become more involved.
You can' make a career with that damage limitation approach.
Ling makes the same mistakes every week and other players have to cover for him all the time. It was noticable on Saturday at how we tried to avoid attacking down our right unless we really had to. He’s a liability and the plYers know that. We haven’t won games because he has played. The fact is, he gets extended runs in the side no matter how poorly he plays. Akinola was bombed out after a bad performance.Harlow wrote: ↑Mon Dec 14, 2020 10:28 am This is seriously p*ssing me off. When Newport scored there were 4 players near the scorer, not one of them tried to close him down as he shot. Orient are on a decent run, Since Ling has been back he has scored a couple of goals (one given to Wilkinson), we have lost twice, one of those to an inform League 1 team (beat Plymouth 3-0 on Saturday). It is a team game, we are a team, all players get it wrong sometimes but the attention on Ling is nonsense. Does anyone know the instructions Sam is playing to? Boss seems to know what he is doing.
Let's stop undermining him, get behind the team, of course we will have moans and groans (after we beat Bradford I asked if we were awful), that is part of it but not this wholesale slagging off of one player. We are in our best position for years, lets go for it!!!
This sums it up. That's not the attitude of a winner.
So you break a neck to get back , 1 of our defenders clearsRonnie Hotdogs wrote: ↑Mon Dec 14, 2020 11:24 amThis sums it up. That's not the attitude of a winner.
He has no idea how the action will pan out, where the ball will drop, what will happen next. You break a neck to get back in and help out your fellow defenders. Especially when it's you that's f**ked up and given the ball away with a stupid throw in the first place.
A fair observation. Which is why on this occasion he deserves the benefit of any doubt surrounding their goal. I think his effort has improved but he is slow, that can’t change, he was plodding back when they scored. Compare his approach to that of Jobi busting a gut to get back. But it was a poor goal to give away and no only due to Ling, if he can be blamed at all. enough players there to make a challenge, none did.Harlow wrote: ↑Mon Dec 14, 2020 10:28 am This is seriously p*ssing me off. Suggesting his effort is the problem - that he’s not trying, that he can’t be bothered - is not on. That’s the worst criticism you can level at a professional player.Dohnut wrote: ↑Mon Dec 14, 2020 1:21 pmA fair observation. A few games back he touched the ball 12 times in the game, excluding throws, Coulson never passed him the ball, he was a passenger with any forward play from us was either a hoof or down the left. That has definitely changed for the better, I don’t think anybody can dispute that. For example Saturday he put in two challenges in the first 70 seconds. Let’s acknowledge the effort he is making.
Depends on the position. The way teams play out from the back these days, players in the back 4 will hit 3 figures no problem.
Not even close. More like half that, and that is the top level. But it's not like we play a wing back system anyway with Alexander-Arnold or Robertson type players.Ronnie Hotdogs wrote: ↑Mon Dec 14, 2020 1:35 pmDepends on the position. Or you could just watch his build upto our goal against bristol rovers .Ronnie Hotdogs wrote: ↑Mon Dec 14, 2020 1:57 pm You do realise that I'm sad enough to film the next stream then watch it back and count up how many touches each player has, don't you?
