Can't agree. You'd be banning The Gentleman and he wasn't half bad in a good movie.

Where will it end? I expect someone could find offence in most media. Open all Hours, Only Fools and Horses, The Sweeny, Minder. The list is endlesss.

Full Metal Jacket another in trouble, prompted by a weird racist post about Texans in another thread. The drill instructor says : "Only steers and queers come from Texas and you don't look like a steer to me so that narrows it down".

I understand Gone With The Wind could be back on the streaming services next week, with an intro by some Afro American Studies prof to provide context/criticism of the Uncle Tommery and suchlike.

No, but words that are frowned on now were used. Some might take offence.

I only watched it over Easter.

I do watch some movies on Talking Pictures TV – they put up warnings at the start if they think it appropriate along the lines of “this picture portrays racial stereotypes which are now considered offensive, but were considered acceptable at the time”, which seems a perfectly reasonable way of dealing with it without full censorship.

Seems too mature an action for the hysterical of today, who want to be outraged.

Gavin and Stacy now on the hitlist.

It would appear that people are now complaining about characters in the show like 'Chinese Alan' and 'Seth, the black fella'.

I'm sure in Gavin & Stacey Smithy and uncle Bryn made one liner jokes about the Welsh, cockneys and Essex types, cant believe anyone was offended. The writing, acting and comedy value was top rate. One of the brst!

Surprised nobody has mentioned Goodness Gracious Me or The Real McCoy?

Such sketches as “Going for an English”.

I read somewhere that the Fawlty Towers episode was removed not because of don't mention the war but because of the racist language the Major spouts in one of his rants.

You are quite correct. Also, Basil expresses some unsavoury comment about being treated by a black doctor in hospital.

So being surprised at being treated by a black doctor is unacceptable, but stereotyping Germans is absolutely fine. Please make it f*cking make sense

The irony with this shitshow is that the comedy is more targeting people’s outdated attitudes towards ethnic minorities, rather than ethnic minorities themselves.

Bet it was an exclusively white committee who made the decision to take these shows down too 🤡 🤡 🤡

Even as a teenager watching this I got the idea that the point of this scene was to poke fun at racism.
The Major was outraged that someone referred to Indian cricketers as co*ns. "I won't have that!" he exclaimed and you thought, wow, the Major isn't the racist old goat you assumed he was. Of course he then goes on to explain that Indians are wo*s and it is the West Indians who are co*ns. OK he did use terminology which is unacceptable, but surely the real point was to laugh at his ridiculous view of the world rather than laugh because the racist terms he used were in themselves funny

And that was my reading of it too. You were laughing at a stupid old racist stuck in the past and still living the Empire. Luckily there's nobody left like that in England these days harking back to a Golden Age where they were poor and exploited but happy sipping on a Dandelion & Burdock aerated water and sooking on Soor Plums.

The Fawlty character was a satire of the morals and manners of a repressed and insecure middle class and middle aged man.

Agree with this. The problem is, once you get beyond some very obvious examples, there is a massive grey area in very many popular historical dramas and comedies that someone now will be asked to make a judgement call on.

And at the end of the day, will banning a set of old programmes and films actually change anything, apart from making some keyboard warriors even more self righteous than before.

Of course it wont solve anything but what it does do is raise an important issue in an imperfect way.

It would be better to discuss it in a grown up way with empathy and an open mind to promote understanding within our communities without the fascists, Tories and the stupid poisoning the debate bleating about perceived injustices which are created by the ruling class not by BAME people.

That well known egg chasing anthem 'Swing low sweet chariot' is under scrutiny as it was written by a slave.
