Thoughts:
Thanks to everything Matt Harrold provided - a real clubman.
Janata - deserved a chance ahead of Grainger and to compare him to Sarge.
Gorman - never showed anything except the odd wild tackle.
Alabi - joke signing of the decade. Whoever scouted him also needs letting go.
Dayton - WTF. Has been injury prone and disappointing when fit.
Ling - how many years is he signed up for?
Judd - never been valued and should be let go.
Have to sign Marv and Ruel asap if possible.
Cisse - get him in.
Marsh - thanks and goodbye.
That is all

Re: Retained list
I think there’s something to be said for consistency that will improve us next season, as a squad. But still can’t see where there’s room to bring in enough players to mount a promotion push next year.
Unfortunately, signing extensions for players like coulson, ling and clay are not just bad decisions but have given us less options to bring in quality in those positions.
The strikers we will have season scored 16 goals BETWEEN them, on an average of 4 per player. We have to hope Ruel continues his ascent and score 20 otherwise it’s mid table again

Re: Retained list
One of the EFL's proposals is to have squads of 20 players including academy youngsters, although I'm not sure it would start next season. Anyway, if the 4 players in negotiation sign, I cant even see a signing except a loan now and again. I wonder if there are any academy players ready for professional contracts

We will never know. We will sell them for a few donut-making ingredients to allow them to star for someone else.POSHO wrote: ↑Wed Jun 03, 2020 8:42 am One of the EFL's proposals is to have squads of 20 players including academy youngsters, although I'm not sure it would start next season. Re: Retained list
In this new market players will NOT be leaving. They have nowhere to go. Judd will be here until the end of his contract, unless loaned out to help cover his cost, which i can't see happening.Cheshunto wrote: ↑Tue Jun 02, 2020 11:20 pmI have no problem with the released players, but the squad looks a bit on the big side to me.Apple Wumble wrote: ↑Tue Jun 02, 2020 9:43 pm Squad looks bloated to me. Happy with the people we are having contract negotiations with but those contract extensions from the end of last season look awful to me. But there you go.
There’s already 24 players there which is a decent sized squad. Can’t see us adding more than 1 or 2, right?
Much will depend on getting Cisse to sign for us along with Sotiriou.
I’d like to see Marsh come back and let Judd leave as I can’t see home getting many games.
Hopefully Marvin will agree a deal too.
There will be some clubs that have a lot of players out of contract this summer. The cute ones will use this period wisely to pick up a few bargains at relatively cheap prices to what they would have paid 3 months ago. We actually don't have a lot of flexibility because of our existing squad size. If we manage to get Cisse back in as well as retaining the one's negotiating then I think that's business concluded - unless prem's start loaning younger players out for free. This could happen, because not many clubs can afford the extra wages of another player.

Re: Retained list
Cisse may be out of contract, but he's still Gillingham's player for now. Would love it if we went all in to sign him, but as others have said the bloated squad with an embarrassment of mediocre equals will make that tough even without the loss of revenue that we're impacted by at present.RedDwarf 1881 wrote: ↑Tue Jun 02, 2020 11:44 pmI believe Cisse is now out of contract at Gillingham so now he's a free agent . I was hoping we’d offer them both new contracts. Cisse made a big difference to our central midfield and Marsh has proven himself to be a better RB than both Ling and Judd put together

Re: Retained list
Yes agree with all that. A mediocre and bloated squad with a very average midfield that would be improved a lot if we could manage to sign Cisse. Also a big bonus if we can get Ruel to stay at the club, would also like to see Marvin stay.Smendrick Feaselberg wrote: ↑Wed Jun 03, 2020 10:13 amCisse may be out of contract, but he's still Gillingham's player for now. I agree that Alabi was not as good as hoped for BUT his goals did assist us in winning the league and I will never forget that tackle away to Salford.Sid Bishop wrote: ↑Wed Jun 03, 2020 10:34 amA very good summing up by @Disoriented !Disoriented wrote: ↑Wed Jun 03, 2020 7:44 am Thoughts:

What worries me is our non-scoring forward line - Sotiriou apart

Re: Retained list
I just wonder where the goals will come from without Sotiriou. Wlikinson? No. Angol? No. Dennis? No. Johnson? Taps in, maybe. We must get in a younger version of Harrold or we will struggle. One of the above needs to play alongside this new guy.Dohnut wrote: ↑Wed Jun 03, 2020 5:15 am Squad of 24 but 4 are youngsters and Jobi may only be a player/Coach. Of course Brill no longer plays so, including loans, our squad has reduced by 8, maybe 12 if contract negotiations fail. A little room for the odd addition, money permitting.
Our chances of keeping Ekpiteta and Sortiriou will have improved, I’m sure there will be plenty of players looking for clubs. Won’t be that easy for them right now in what will be a buyers market.
Dayton had a 1 year deal with an additional 1 year extension option. Don’t know the details of the extension option, maybe his choice.
What I do hope is that our squad work hard on fitness and players have used their time to recover from knocks. Though with reduced contact working with a physio will be difficult over FaceTime. I felt we seemed off the pace last season following the step up.
Given the current situation I think we are in OK shape. Another season of consolidation.

Re: Retained list
All of the above strikers are more than capable of scoring us the goals necessary for a good season. Our real problem is the lack of service we give them and the way we play them .DuvB wrote: ↑Wed Jun 03, 2020 10:52 amI just wonder where the goals will come from without Sotiriou. Wlikinson? Re: Retained list
Sorry that we couldn't sign Cisse permanently. Apart from that, it's a pretty predictable list.
IMO we have the players to challenge for a top 3 place, if they all perform as they are capable of doing. Its the man (manager) management I have a concern about, will RE be able to get the best out of this bunch?

Re: Retained list
For me its interesting that we are still in negotiations with Ekpiteta and Sotiriou. It's been going on for months. I wonder that in this current climate it's better the devil you know. I would have thought that we have given them a strict deadline and that there is a good chance that they will sign

Re: Retained list
The squad looks relegation fodder at present. Very light on strikers, powderpuff CM and two weak RBs that were leaking goals for fun before Marsh got moved there.
Simply have to keep Sotiriou or can't see where any goals will come from. Angol looks fed up and disinterested, Wilkinson identifies as a winger and jury is out on Johnson.
Too many NL players in there, which is an even bigger problem now in the context of reduced budgets. Another season of survival battle ahead I reckon unless T&T pull some rabbits out the hat with funding for signings.

Re: Retained list
Shame about Harrold. I've always liked the fella, but I suppose his time had come.
Alabi in reality, went months ago. He'll struggle in the current climate to get employment again.
Ruel is very important. He'll be worth a million this time next year, he could go all the way to the top.

Re: Retained list
I think Gorman would have the potential to become a very good player but he needed regular game time. Obviously, he wasn't going to come back after heading to Newport. The verdict is still out for many of those on the squad but as this is a very uncertain period and because of the times we are in, I'm not going to be overharsh.
