So is this Northern Soul /Disco?

I’ve never heard this song before
Great song, from the late 70s disco times..he was more mainstream by then, & of course had released 'War' a good while before that which also made the UK charts.
I’ll listen to some more of his stuff
That’s some tune👍

I was too young for the Wigan scene for example, but I have since spoke with people that used to go and they told me it was just a magical time with great music, but it was also and no one has mentioned this yet the fashion scene was massive as well. Brands still hark back to it now with retro garments etc. as the scene may not be what it was, but is still loved immensely.

Regularly played were,
Frankie Valli - You’re Ready Now
Edwin Starr - War
Freda Payne - Band of Gold
Not sure if these are Northern Soul or not ??
Yes CheshuntO they all qualify, particularly War & Band of Gold from the Blackpool era & Valli from the earlier phase.Edwin Starr was & still is a cult figure in the Northern scene, so much so that he eventually based himself in England. There're loads of good tracks by him, but this one's my fave...if you take a look at the record label, the record came out in 1967 on the 'Gordy' label (as in Motown's Berry Gordy), & the producer is 'N. Whitfiled who went on in the 70's to produce soul acts like Rose Royce.

Thanks Gealish.
I think Norman Whitfield produced some of the The Temptations music if I’m not mistaken.
Thanks again for all the Utube vids of some great music.

The Northern Soul scene was a fascinating sub-culture. I was more into the jazz funk scene more prevalent around the South East suburbs back in the late 70s (think Canvey’s Goldmine, Caister weekenders), but our local club - Green Gate/Oscars Newbury Park - ran a few awayday coaches up North and I went to Wigan Casino and Blackpool to sample a couple of all-nighters.

The dancing was mad, as the records had a high bpm, and the dj’s were desperate to find cult “new” grooves that had been ignored and sunk without trace when originally released by niche artists basically plagiarising the 60s uptempo Motown sound. And the clobber was stuck in an early 70s timewarp, so it really looked unusual to us southern softies at the end of the decade.

Road Runner - Junior walker and the All Stars version and most of those previously mentioned. fantastic music. If it wasn't for "Arthur Itis" I'd love to have one all-nighter again, but I'd probably not walk for a year afterwards  so I'll stick to the memories.

The goldmine is gone now, replaced by flats. Loved the canister weekender! I got in a massive fight up oscars on new year over some girl I wasn't even with! Ended up with her though afterwards!

Nothing to do with Northern Soul, but used to love the Green Gate, Newbury Park in the mid to late sixties and early seventies, likewise The Plough & Harrow, Leytonstone. Back to Northern Soul, one of the best non football threads, in a long while, really enjoyable, in my opinion.
