Irony is that Arsenal had a load of crocks in the final and were very under par. Like I said and predicted. I've said since before the season started on the other board we would win this league and today i still have not seen anything to change my opinion.
Ipswich were a really good side that year and I would guess that West Brom would have been our best bet, but let's be honest, all the other 3 sides left at that stage were very good, we needed something special liked in the previous rounds, but we just never got going and seemed to be overawed that day. Just look again ( if you can bear to ! ) at those three awful goals we let in, two deflected Malcolm McDonald shots and the Graham Rix shot that the normally reliable Jackson dived over and went underneath his body !! OK, but they Ipswich were still good enough to knock out the very good West Brom side 3-1 in the semi final and then go on to beat Arsenal 1-0 in the fa cup final !! It's a very long time ago and I remembered that Ipswich were a really top side in that era and also played very well in the final. Perhaps I should instead have said that Ipswich were a very strong Division One side throughout most of the 70s and early 80s. Season 1977-78 was the only blip in that period where their league form dropped, but this was more than compensated by winning the win the FA cup that year !! So season 1977-78 apart, from seasons 1972-73 up to 1981-82 Ipswich never finished out of the top six teams, finishing 2nd twice and 3rd 3 times. Also as already said, winning the Fa Cup in season 1977–78 plus winning the UEFA Cup in season 1980-81. Sad now to see this fine old team relegated to Division One ( the old Division three ) but these setbacks happen to many fine old teams of the past and sometimes they come back stronger !!
