US has a trade surplus with us (unlike the EU/Canada etc) so we may get out from the worst of it
Hopefully Starmer can use his famous charisma to charm Trump

All of that assumes the US is capable of delivering. I'm not so sure they will remain stable internally.
The US used to operate tariffs on imported goods up to (I think, but happy to be corrected) the early 20th century until it transitioned to an income tax model. The impact was disproportionately felt across different states, and is considered one of the driving factors that led to the civil war. So this is a risk.

It would be rather rich for the EU to pearl clutch about tariffs when they impose them on all non member countries and have done for decades

Chicken Is it still chlorinated ?
Mountain dew Ours is safer
Bread Ours is safer American stuff is banned in lots of countries
Cars nobody wants that poo poo
Apple electronics all made in China still ?
Stuff that KIILS people yup loads of that
C&W music although it's absolute dog pooh.
Anything else that tariffs that can be retaliated against?

Earlier today, we told you about how the leader of Ontario - Canada's most populous province, which makes up about 38% of the country's GDP - had set out his own pre-emptive consequences for Trump's proposed tariffs.
In the last few minutes, Ontario Premier Doug Ford has announced that his province is halting retaliatory measures it planned to implement if Trump's tariff took affect.
In a post on X, he said "temporarily" averting the tariffs is "giving time for more negotiation and time for cooler heads to prevail".
Looks like the Americans bottled it after Ontario grabbed them by the nuts.
Well done Canada
Seems like tearing up Elons starlink contract worth a $100 million hurt

It's part of a wider strategy that will see the end of multilateralism, and bring in the new era of unilateralism whereby the US is the main power-broker and chooses to engage with individual nations on a purely transactional basis. The way politics, international trade, security, and even capitalism, have been managed since WWII is over. The US has decided that the current system exposes them to too many downsides, and not enough upsides, so they are ending it.
There will be short- to medium-term pain for US consumers. Any gains from tariffs will be lost to reciprocal action from other countries and increases in domestic goods prices. Plus, the process of reindustrialising will be inflationary, so expect to see their central bank intervening (which could have nasty second-order effects on the £).
But longer-term, they will be less plugged in (and therefore exposed) to the "international world order". It will also disrupt and potentially undermine the cohesiveness of any other trading blocks, such as the EU. And, there will be massive opportunity to consolidate wealth and power within the US system for those in a position to do so.
Isn't this predicated on the US driving down wages and creating rampant poverty? When the majority get hit by this surely they pivot to a different leader?

F*ck knows. If they want to drive up exports then they'll look to drive down wages. But by the time then next election comes along it's hard to predict what the economic and political landscape will look like.
Right now, the Trump Party controls the three main political institutions and he has the tech bros onside. He has two years before he faces any political risk, so he's going to go hell for leather now.

He’s done more in 2 weeks than the Tories did in 12 years and Starmer has done in 6 months. Not saying what he’s done has been good but he’s done more.

These are the final days, aren’t they? I’m sure pammy will be along to tell me not to worry about things that won’t happen. But this must be what final days look and feel like.

It's both the end of something, and the beginning of something. It's another way.

Trump now supporting the ethnic cleansing of Gaza, says 'Palestinians would be thrilled to live somewhere beautiful' in Jordan or Ethiopia.
Am I mistaken or did Trump really suggest recently that Gaza would be perfect location for a luxury tourist resort?
Maybe another Trump tower and golf course?
