Seaman's save was actually better than I remembered, the way he changed direction and had the strength to divert the ball:
I was at that game, but sat in the opposite end with the Arsenal fans. We had no idea how good that save was until watching it on the replays. This was in part due to the speed and distance, and in part due to the quantities of booze sunk in the coach up to Manchester. There was only a sense that something had happened due to the reaction from the United fans.

Looking at it again, I think that Banks has to leap back and under his frame slightly to block the ball, which does make it more difficult. And it's a powerful header at relatively close range. So it's definitely a very good save, but we'll all have watched better over the years in successive tournaments.
This is helpful too in explaining why it became seared into folklore - the commentary, and the fact that it was the first tournament broadcast to the nation in full lurid colour. The way that folk memories form depends on stuff like this - unprecedented communal sensory experiences. So to speak.
As an 8 year old I watched it on the colour telly my dad bought from Jim Allans house sale because he was legally migrating to South Africa. I recall thinking that Banksy wasn't very tall for a keeper and being angry at Pele for missing a sitter. That was the year I got my first Brasil kit.
