Are people saying Sweeney isn’t athletic?
Didn’t watch the game but his attacking threat is decent. I assume Richie has said that if he’s going to keep his place then he has to be more mindful of his defensive responsibilities and therefore isn’t bombing on as much. Some people will find anything to moan at about him

It was suggested during the Summer that we wanted more athletic full backs . If Sweeney was the answer then why did he struggle to get even on the bench last season ? I'm hoping yesterday was only a bad day at the office for Hemming. I'll give him a few more games before I make an opinion on him .Sweeney on the other hand I've seen play loads of times and in my opinion he's not good enough to be a first team starter .

You, and a lot of our fans, seem to imagine up a world where players all round game stays static.

Like we should keep every player in their 30s because they aren’t going to decline.
Like any young player has played 25 games at 20 and will never improve.

Sweeney wasn’t on the bench last season because we had better players at the time. He’s progressed, got older, had another season under his belt, another year of coaching from Richie, physically matured into his body a bit more, a bit stronger, etc etc…

He’s only going to improve now by playing. Which is why we should give him games. Richie ain’t no mug, he clearly sees something in him otherwise he wouldn’t be starting the first game of the season

Clare is more like it physically but might be a loose cannon

Whatever the metric of quality is RW / the club will need to make a call within the next few weeks as if we need a replacement GK / LB need them in before the window shuts

He wasn’t bundled off the ball, he tried to shield the ball and the more experienced player who had not long been pn the pitch nicked the ball infront of him.

You should be more concerned about the captain for yesterday who actually was out muscled by everyone

The worst moment for me was when we had a free kick that would have worked if he hadn’t over hit a 15 yard pass. Couldn’t seem to win a header but overall average performance.

That free kick was a decent move but like you say he fkd what was essentially a very simple pass in to the box. He had some decent moments in the game but overall was pretty uninspiring.

I can't see us replacing Hemming. For better or worse he's now our first choice keeper . We have to hope Yesterday was only a blip or its going to be a long season .
