So a few too many could mean consuming over 16 or more beers. This is like the cookery programmes I'm forced to watch when they say "and add a pinch of salt" I am horrified how big they believe a pinch is.

A few is more than a couple and less than many and possibly less than more but could be exactly the same as a bunch. There sorted. Personally I think you lot are off your tits and that my friend's is a pair and not a couple

The question is not correctly phrased then. If you say “a few beers” and get three, you’d feel shortchanged but not able to say anything cos you didn’t specify. Four would be exactly right, five would seem like overkill. Ergo, “few” means “four” if you need to put a number on it, but the non specificity of it means that you can’t complain about a bit of leeway either way
If I tell her I'm going for a couple, she takes that as three; If I'm going for a few then its very open ended.
Conversely when I come back from having a couple I've only had two and after a few well.....its a question of how long I was gone!
