I thought the general consensus on here was that everyone deserved a second chance.

however, is he to be unemployed forever, 'till he dies?

He made one mistake, albeit a big one, but he apologised, and as i said, how can a young man, never be allowed to work again throughout his life, because of that mistake?

It doesn't sit well with me, but Im prepared to give the lad a chance, to make amends
Should this same grace be extended to fans?

Someone shouts a racial slur at a player. Gets a lifetime ban. Says how sorry they are. Do we let them back in?

If the answer is “no” for a fan, then why is it not the same for a player?

Really poor move from the club this.

“Everybody deserves a second chance” is facile bollocks.

This is a guy with no obvious track record of being a particularly good footballer, no history of even playing regularly enough to be considered a reliable player, who has been signed despite a recent instance of pretty shocking racism, which he admitted.

It seems to me unlikely that this signing is worth the trouble

I’d add to the “which he admitted” part: “but blamed it on being p*ssed”.

Even if he was a decent footballer, it’s a shocking signing.

Thought he was going to start crying in the interview, definitely layed it on a bit too thick. You didn’t kill anyone mate although it is 2024 so a few words is just as bad.

Does this all depend on his ability?

Good = everyone deserves a second chance, in Wellens we trust
Bad = disgraceful decision by Ling, what was he thinking?

Depends how much trouble there’s going to be. My bet is: not much.

Having spoken with him and training at the club for two weeks I completely trust Richie's and the club's judgment on this . Also if Beckles and Prately are cool with this then that's good enough for me . We can all make mistakes . It's now time for Jack to put the past behind him and get on with rebuilding his career. I hope he turns out to be a good player for us . Welcome to Orient Jack .

Everybody deserves a second chance is not facile bollocks. So, in the gospel according to CEB if you make a mistake in life, that's it for ever. Even if you live to be 100, that mistake will never be forgiven or forgotten. You will never get another job or be able to support your family. As has been stated in this thread we have taken on players like Otto and Omozusi who committed far worse offences than Simpson. He has apologised and seems to be generally remorseful about what he did.

Obviously you have to take these things on a case by case basis, but I don't see why in this instance, it'd be any less true than for someone who committed armed robbery or someone who served time for trying to attack a witness to a murder trial. Both of those players went on to do a lot of atoning for their mistakes and you'd hope this will be another instance of that.

I don’t really think there’s any relevance to comparing it with an armed robbery. Looked at on its own, it’s a decision which didn’t need to be made.
I hate the “second chance” narrative because it’s a gross reframing of what is a cynical decision to get a player on the cheap as an act of altruism: essentially putting the club in the role of charitable good Samaritans, spotting the REAL person underneath the reputation after a regrettable mistake.

It stinks.

Assume he now has to serve a 6 match suspension before he can play for us.
Seems a strange signing, but I back RW’s and the clubs decision, they are best placed to assess the situation

Sunak has commented on the move saying what he said was wrong. Lee Anderson liked it on X and Richard Tice is having a meeting with him in the Orient Cafe in the coming weeks.

We all mistakes, he said something stupid, not physically raped/assaulted someone, he is still pretty young, if Wellens and co are happy to get him in the squad, then so be it, it will be a storm in a teacup, I'm sure the squad were talking about it for two days and then it would've been yesterday's news.
