I'd love a middle order of Stokes, Foakes and Woakes.

Burns
Roy
Root
Malan
Stokes
Foakes (wk)
Woakes
Curran (Sam)
Broad
Archer
Leach
Nice team, I was thinking something similar, would probably keep Butler for Foakes though. I'd never have played roy in the first test but now he's in he needs a chance in a few games. Hopefully we'll not see ali in england whites for a long time, he's gone from a batsmen who can bowl a bit to someone who can't bat or bowl.

I think Archer's style of bowling could trouble Smith so looking forward to that in the second test.

So cheats do prosper it seems. The local BandQ has had a rush on sandpaper too. Mind you I’m sure the Aussies are a little more creative now. Sandpaper lined trousers, even shirt badges made of grit.

Anything goes in the name of winning.

And the amazing thing is, why did someone as good as Smith have to do it? Mind you, the Australians are notoriously bad losers.

I think Warner (and Darren Lehmann) were the brains behind it. I think its widely known that Warner was calling the shots when Smith was captain.

So all in all, the Aussies showed ''True Grit''

Don’t agree Sid. They didn’t show True Grit, they hid the grit, and much better than before. The ball had a close encounter of the worst kind.

With all the talk to the sandpaper incident, in this case, a ''pun'' e.g True Grit. referring to the way the Aussies battled back from being 122-8 to finishing at a score of 284 runs and then end up winning the match after starting their second innings 90 runs behind Englands first innings score.
Certain players in the England team need to realise they need to cut out the one day shots and be told that they are playing 5 day test cricket and knuckle down and be prepared to tough it out when batting. Buttler, Bairstow and Roy in particular are getting themselves out. Denly like Vince, not a test player and Moeen Ali needs to go back to County Cricket and sort his game out, in both the batting and bowling departments. Meantime I would go for bringing in Sam Curran, Jack Leach and Jofra Archer. Sam Curran swings the ball, lively bowler and scores runs in the lower order similar to the way Woakes does. Problem for England now is that it is harder to get into the team than it is to be dropped from it !!

Like Smith is obviously calling the shots now that Paine is captain?

It absolutely doesn't mean that what Smith did was okay- I think it just explains what happened.

So why isn't Warner still calling the shots now?

Mediocre from England and I dare say changes for the next game. Archer needs to get his chance in an Ashes game.

Well IF FIT enough to play, Archer is surely a must to play. i say ''IF Fit enough to play'' because of the side strain he has been suffering from, he even had this injury it in the recent one day World cup competition. We don't want another incident like the last test where Anderson went down injured after just 4 overs bowled !! Surely also a must to bring Sam Curran back, lively bowler and a good lower order batsman.
